Second HDD in instead of optical drive -will it work & which

#1 Post by Wiking » Tue Jul 12, 2011 2:26 pm

Hi,
I have T60 2007-FUG. Just found out that IBM offers an adapter to put second HDD instead of the optical drive.
Does it work (read somewhere that not) ?
Which model (FRU) do I need ? how it will work (do I put a sata II HDD into it and just put instead of my optical drive) ?
Thanks for the help
Lior

Yes, it works perfectly with any 2.5" 9.5mm form factor SATA drive.
FRU #26R9246 (SATA to PATA bridge). See Service Parts in the link below:

Note: The above is different from the 2nd HDD Adapter for the "newer" machines (SATA to SATA). The one below will not work on the T60[p]:

I have several of these adapters..

The originaly ones are much better, also cost more but I think its worth it..

Original are stronger plastic, the ebay ones broke apart after a few uses

Original ones lets you take the rubber bumper off and slide it in with the screws intact, ebay ones does not, you have to remove all the screws off the hdd, kinda time consuming..

I would go original lenovo

Although my SATA Ultrabay adapter is marked "ThinkPad", I believe it is not OEM but rather a "knockoff". However, I did not need to remove the HD caddy/screws in order to get the drive to fit. I bought mine from Digizon.

Hi,
The problem with HDD adapters lies on the chip inside,as Sata to IDE conversion is needed, some work and some not...,Often with the "bad" ones, you got disc initialization error and you need to reboot a second time for the disc to be recognize and if you have a different OS on HDD adapter (a very good way to have a dual boot and keeping the availability of the recovery partition) now you can type F12 to choose the disc to boot for....

Some members also reports problems with seagate drives ,so be aware of that...

I bought two HDD adapters from ebay for my T60p, one gave me initialization error(need a reboot to work) and the second one work flawlessly on my Hitachi 250 Gig/5400 rpm/sata2 ..

The "good" one is sold in a kit along with an USB external case to fit your optical drive ,very handy..
Here is the link for the kit,but if you only want the HDD adapter, the same seller sold it alone if you want:

Best regards from France

Hi,
I forgot to warn you ,if you buy the hdd from the link i provided, you should know on the one i bought the connector is made in a way it requires notorious strength to insert the HDD in,take care to push from the hdd back edge without pressure on the "flat" (A little confusing explanation ,i agree..!!)
You should also have the four screws on the hdd for guidance and good fitting...

Have a good day..!!

In my experience it works beautifully. Bought on ebay:

Member id rexchg ( Feedback Score Of 54564Purple shooting star icon for
feedback score in between 50,000 to 99,999) eBay Store

Item Title: SATA 2nd hard HDD Caddy drive Adapter F ibm lenovo T60P -

eBay BIN 2nd HD caddy for T60 from Kowloon, Hong Kong $11.79 shipped
- - - -

It was almost but not quite OK. I had to use a very fine file to sand down two nubs on the gate that holds the HD in place in the tray. It was very easy to do. Before I did that, the gate would not quite go down all the way and the tray wouldn't quite slide all the way in and therefore the arrangement wouldn't work.

The neat thing about this system is that you can slip a HD into the tray in 10 seconds, remove the optical drive and replace it with the 2nd HD in another 10 seconds. It's that fast.
