how to check if USB3.0 is working correctly?

#1 Post by ausmike » Thu Jul 14, 2011 3:02 pm

Hello Everyone;
I did a quick search on this topic but found nothing suitable

I have W520; EdgeE520 and X220 Series machine (double checked and confirmed that they have the LATEST DRIVERS) ; each of them has the USB3.0 as per spec's
But it seems to transfer lots slower (using Seagate 1.5T usb3.0 external drive) on these newer machines! I get average speeds of around 20-30MB/sec on Edge & W Series machines (not tried on X series yet)
However, I did the SAME SET OF FILES (31GB set - approx. 1700 items) gives me 60-&0MB/sec on my OLDER W500 machines (T9600 with usb2.0 Enhan drivers)
Using:
Windows x64 Prof on all of them , and ALL of them have the Intel SSD drives –
AND
Windows function = "MOVE TO FOLDER - " rather than copy to-.

So HOW DO YOU tests for USB3.0 working correctly?
Does the "Move" makes a difference as compared to "copy"?

Any info would be greatly appreciated;
thanks
Mike

Ausmike, your best bet is probably to update your drivers per this thread: "[W510] - USB 3.0 SSD, poor performance" (the Lenovo drivers are slow), in which you'll also find links describing various tests that you can perform, as well as reviews showing real-world performance. The W520 uses the same NEC chipset to provide USB 3.0 as does the W510.

You'll see that, particularly on laptops, USB 3.0 apparently isn't the panacea portrayed by all the hype.

If you can't get something close to the performance obtained by users in that thread, then you might post further questions there.

Good luck!

Qform:
thanks for feedback> instresting read
..and just resign to the fact that transfering 300GB+ files via USB3 or eSata will take longer
I narrow it down to "turbo memory" present in older models, and not well utalised in the NEWER Models ... But than hey - am no Teckie ....Maybe I will tinker with it later - some day

Cheers

ps>great W700 page - I did have the W700 wth RAID and did upgrade them to SSD and now sold it to a co worker - hes very happy with it - as his MAJOR PC . Its still a brute workhorse (like most w series are)
