Windows XP OS w/64 bit for IBM thinkpad?

I am not sure if it is appropriate to post here. I have a T40 machine, although it will not mean much to its 32 bit hardware. Will IBM inititate a change of the OS? Read the news here:

As far as ThinkPads are concerned, IBM will probably not change the OS. Pentium M chips run 32-bit software. 64-bit software only really matters if you need more than 4GB of RAM, in which case a notebook is useless because there's just no way to physically install that much memory.

Edit: This belongs in the Windows OS forum.
Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!
