Upgrade Vista to 7 still active?

#1 Post by jiopsi » Sun Jul 17, 2011 1:07 pm

Is the upgrade program still working, or do I have to buy full 7 x64?

You can use the upgrade, but there's no upgrade path from x86 Vista to x64 Windows 7. It'll need to be a clean install.

How will I get the clean install activated?

The same as you always would...enter the W7 Upgrade key when the installer asks for it.

Ok, so I will have to order upgrade key/ disc from Lenovo, are they free? Or could I use Lenovo 7 x64 OEM DVD? I have read that it autoactivates if machine uses SLIC2.1, as it does now with Middleton BIOS?

You didn't mention that you do not have the upgrade CD. Be careful in discussing SLIC2.1 here. IXNAY on the BIOS-AY. :) I doubt Lenovo is handing out CD's as part of the upgrade program. I believe it ended long ago.

I have a T61p and there was not a Lenovo Windows 7 recovery DVD for it. I tried at the time. You need to purchase a new Windows 7 Pro 64-bit retail package and install that. This is a good time to buy a new and larger hard drive and keep the existing one as a spare. I got a 500Gb 7200-rpm drive for my machine.

The Lenovo upgrade program for eligable systems finished in early 2010, and in any case a T61 would not have been an eligable system.

The only legal option available to you is buy a retail copy of the Windows 7 x64 version you want to install, and do a clean install from that.

jiopsi, if I were you, I would just keep using Vista for a while and upgrade to Windows 8 later. Contrary to what you may have heard, Vista with SP2 is a great OS and on your T61 it should run nearly as fast as Win7, and Microsoft will continue to support it until at least April 2017. I like Vista more than both XP and 7.

Of course you can upgrade (as well noted) just not for free. .... JDH
