8gb RAM on T61?

I just install a 750gb WD scorpio black and put in Windows7 64bit. I currently have 4GB RAM.

Can I upgrade to 8gb RAM? I read the specs max out at 4gb, but some have put in 8gb?

I have the 7661-LU9.

I have very minimal apps on the host OS. I run mostly VMs.

Yes you should be able to use 2x4GB sticks. See the Thinkwiki Unofficial maximum memory specs page.
