G40 / 41 backlight replacement

#1 Post by cliddell » Fri Jul 22, 2011 3:53 pm

Hello all

I have a G40 with a dead backlight. (I have replaced the inverter board with a new one but still no screen illumination.) ISTR seeing a guide to Thinkpad backlight replacement somewhere of this forum but cannot find it anywhere. Please can somebody point me in the right direction - or am I imagining such a thing?

TIA for guidance and any advice.

Well, I managed it - I only wrote off two backlights in the process  but my beloved G40 (2.4 gHZ CPU) is now functioning again. :D I have another G40 with dead backlight to sort so hopefully I will be able to provide an explanation of replacing a G40 / G41 backlight, with copious photographs to illustrate the process. However I am moving house in a few days so do not expect a posting *too* soon...

(next instalment: sorting a G41 with the dreaded 1-3-3-1 beep code - watch this space!)

1-3-3-1 is the normal beep for any motherboard without RAM!

It gives that code *with* RAM installed - it gives a different code (can't remember what) if I try to fire it up without RAM installed!

If it beeps 1-3-3-1 with RAM, then the RAM is most likely faulty.
If it beeps anything else without RAM, you most likely need to get another motherboard.

I think this really belongs in a new thread, but suffice to say it was working fine before it kept locking up and then finally ceased to function. I was wondering if something on the motherboard has fried, but investigation will have to wait until a house move has passed and its consequent dust cloud settled.

To be continued!
