I wonder if the thick bezels of most current laptops (not just Thinkpads) are because manufacturers are trying to make these machines as thin as possible, by displacing interior components laterally. I don't buy the "bigger keyboard" argument because there are lots of 14" and larger laptops that have thick keyboard bezels as well as thick display bezels.
