I wonder if the thick bezels of most current laptops (not just Thinkpads) are because manufacturers are trying to make these machines as thin as possible, by displacing interior components laterally. Indeed, Panasonic's laptops are pretty thick, and so they can have thin bezels.

I don't buy the "bigger keyboard" argument because there are lots of 14" and larger laptops that have thick keyboard bezels as well as thick display bezels.

+1 and then some...I never quite understood why that never happened...

You're not kidding. That's got to be one of the sexiest ThinkPads ever, and an extremely usable one at this day and age. Gorgeous machines and then some. Had they ever been offered with IPS/AFFS, there would be one in my house right now...

Now, my "dream" machines:

a) A 240Z with an IPS screen and newer guts

b) An A31p with the internals of W701

Now you can bring in the boys in white...

Would like to see a vertical cut showing what's inside the X220 (drain plate, roll cage, drives, main board etc ) and to what extent achieving thikcness, even weight are important matters at the moment of producing a high quality notebook, in other words what is the limit of compromises between form factor and quality? Where in this scenario is the X220 dream machine?
