Question about memory upgrade

#1 Post by likesspace » Sun Jul 24, 2011 4:29 pm

Hi everyone.

I have a T60 that I'm about to add some RAM to.

It currently have two 512 MB chips and I just bought a single 2 GB chip.

My question is: Can I simply remove one of the 512 MB chips and add the 2 GB chip for a total of 2.5 GB?

My original plan was to remove both of the 512's and then just add the 2 GB, but if I can keep one of the 512's and use 2.5 GB that certainly sounds better.

If I can use one of the 512 chips, doe it have to be in a certain slot (upper/lower) to work correctly, in conjunction with the 2 GB chip?

This is probably a really stupid question, but I don't know a lot about computers.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, that'll work fine. I'm using 2GB crucial + 512 MB samsung memory without any problems.
I have the 2GB stick in the lower slot, but it should work either way.

Thanks for the fast reply.

I'll set mine up exactly like yours.
That is what I was hoping to hear.

Thanks again!

I had a similar situation some days ago.

My T60 had 1.5 GB inside, which was inadequate when processing large photos in GIMP.

So, I bought a 2 GB SODIMM DDR2 @667 MHz, and when I opened my T60 I removed the 512 MB SODIMM and kept the 1 GB one. So, I maxed out the T60 to 3 GB, which is the chipset limit.
Now, it runs very nicely and can wrestle with lots of applications in the same time without swapping under Windows XP.

(I checked that the existing SODIMM modules were already 667 MHz ones, so all the memory will run at maximum speed, as far as I know)

N.F.
