Two blown system boards? LCD couldn't possibly be a cause?

#1 Post by seaweedsl » Mon Jul 25, 2011 12:24 am

Hi all. My 14" t42p just died yesterday. Blank screen. It gives off a long/short/short error beep, which is "System board, RAM, or Display".

I swapped the Ram around a bit, and no joy, so time for a new systemboard, I figure.

I had a T43p base so I just swapped out displays and put in my T42p hard drives\. It booted up and went into windows, then froze after 10min. I forced it to restart. Now it alternates between blank screen and freezing up while booting. Usually it locks up before entering BIOS or booting the drive, but once in ten times, it will go further.

I tried swapping out CPUs and moving the RAMs around on it as well, swapping DIMMS and swapping slots. No change except an older 1.6 would not even boot for the first 30 seconds.

It's gone, right? And there's no way the T42p LCD (with it's usual cable) could have done something to the T43p's board, right? Perfectly compatible, I believe. I figure that I had bad luck and bought a dying T43 that just passed testing.

Just checking...

Thanks,
Steve

That's a NO-GO.
The hardware from a T43 is way too different from a T42. I'm surprised it even booted in the first place!
You need to do a fresh install on the T43 (or use a HD with a T43/R52 Windows installation), then transfer personal data from the T42 HD to the T43 HD.

Well, I thought I'd try. It did go pretty far, but XP was dancing hard to adjust to all the changes, as I had expected it would. But that's a moot point as it hasn't gotten to booting the drive since.

My main question is if it's possible the display is somehow affecting the motherboards. It's the hardware that remained the same. I doubt it, but double checking. Coincidence? Or caused by something. I tested (to BIOS) the T43p base a couple times with another, UXGA display a year ago. Same test the vender had done, no doubt. But time and travel could have done the damage.

Unless I find a base or stripped T42p, I'll probably be emailing you at the "Board room" soon.

Thanks,
Steve
