IBM R50 will not boot

#1 Post by petermarston » Mon Jul 25, 2011 8:33 am

Hi, I have an IBM R50 (1831-EG1) which has been working for 5 years but now will not boot.

When the laptop is switched on the display does not turn on the fan keeps spinning and there are no beeps.

I have tried removing all parts but still the same occurs.

The memory, hard drive are working fine (tested in another laptop).

Any ideas what the problem could be.

Thank you.

Welcome to the forum.
Try an external monitor first.
If only the backlight is out, either the inverter, the LCD cable, the CCFL-tube or the LCD itself is defective.
Also, check the fuses on the mobo, using http://theboardroom.info/T4x_Fuses.pdf which is almost identical.
After removing all RAM, HD, CD, wifi-card, BT and/or Modem card, the laptop should beep 1-3-3-1.
If not, try and replace the CPU.
If still no joy, you need to replace the motherboard (see the link in my signature).

Tried everything suggested and still the same occurs.

Must be a motherboard problem.

Thanks for the help
