x40 memory install no boot up

#1 Post by hoy » Tue Jul 26, 2011 8:28 pm

Hi, good morning

I just had my memory installed (originally none was in the slot and I think the laptop sa using it's stock...?), I'm new to installing fresh memory chips so I did research and found that the x40 needed pc2700 DDR SODIMM memory... if i'm correct... so I bought a 2nd hand 1 gig memory of that spec since there were none being sold in the market now... the seller guaranteed the functioning of the memory so I bought it in good faith and followed all the instructions at the IBM website for installing memory for the x40 laptop (eg. removing the battery, grounding myself...), but when I turned on the laptop nothing happens, just a blank black screen... the 1 and 2 indicator lights that usually blinks at the bottom of the LCD doesn't blink, only the battery and the circle thing... (sorry, I don't know what it's called)... so basically the laptop doesn't boot... Did I install a memory chip that had the wrong spec...? faulty memory..? Thank you, any help would be very grateful.

According to Crucial, it takes up to 1GB of DDR PC2700 • CL=2.5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR333 • 2.5V • 128Meg x 64 • in it's one available slot. I suspect the RAM is bad or incompatible.

Oh wait! You would have to be able to boot the system to check the memory. I'm with Harry on this one being a defective stick.
