T23 Fan error

#1 Post by Wiking » Sat Jul 30, 2011 5:33 am

Hi,
Today my dad powered on his T23 (2647-4MG) and received a FAN ERROR.
A couple of weeks before, I removed the fan with the heat sink and cleaned it and also put a new thermal.
Suggestions what to do ? It can't be loose connection because it worked great for a couple of weeks.
Also, after few attempts, it started and with TPFanControl software in windows XP, the fan worked as it should. But, at first attempt, I heard strange noises form the fan that were like it is struggling to work.
So, my best shoot is to replace the fan with the heat sink.
Any one has a new one to sell me ? Does the fans on ebay from china are good ?
Please, If you have a link for a good seller, I'll really appreciate giving it to me.
By lenovo service manual the FRU of it is 26P9166.

Thank you guys
Lior

Any fan noise from a fan that old would tell me to replace it.

I checked the site you gave me and seems that all parts are not new. Can I trust them to buy from them ? I can pay by paypal there and also they postage to Israel where I live so it is good news but I want to be sure.

Another problem:
After I opened and cleaned it a couple of weeks ago, the display at first power on is dim like loose connection but at windows start logo it become good as it should. suggestions ? LCD inverter replace or LCD cable replace ? May be it worth to replace them all ?
This T23 is 11 years old but I want to keep it running because it is a good medical notebook for my dad so I want to fix it to survive at least one year more.
Thanks again for your help.

Sure, they have a 30 day warranty which you will not likely find elsewhere for a used fan. The dim LCD on power up is due to a weak backlight if it is also accompanied by a red tint. Otherwise try an inverter first, and then replace the LCD second. ,

Ok, I'll order from them the fan.
Do I need to soldering anything when I replace the backlight ? I can remove and replace everything in the thinkpad but soldering is too big for my skill in this area. where can I buy a new backlight ?
*I saw few guides about CCFL but wasn't sure if I need to solder a new one.

Yes soldering is required to replace a backlight. It's a job not recommended unless you have that skill and basic tool skills. Even then, it is not an easy undertaking and dirt/dust is the enemy in that job. I recommend that you replace the entire LCD or even the entire LCD/Lid assembly. If all you need is another year, just let it go and see what happens. Weak backlights have been known to last that long, or longer...or it might die tomorrow.

Update:
I replaced the fan but before, my LCD backlight died. So, I bought a used LCD, inverter and cable.
After installing it all (not completely assembling all the other parts - just wanted to check) it is still the same.
What can be the problem if LCD, inverter and cable are in working condition for sure ?
What I did wrong ?
