Page_Fault_In_NonPaged_Area Caused by Ibmfilter.sys

#1 Post by Victor43 » Sat Jul 30, 2011 5:58 pm

We have an older IBM thinkpad T42 Type 2378 FZU and it is constantly Blue Screening with the following code. 00000050 (0xFE64F000, 0x00000000, 0x804E7428, 0x00000000) just about anytime when running virus updates or starting firefox or just at random. We have used Windbg to determine which file is causing the BSOD and it always point to ibmfilter.sys. We are running Windows XP Professional w/SP3.

We have tried running a chkdsk c: /f but it does not run on a reboot of the system even though it says it will. Apparently the volume is locked or being used by another process that prevents it from running on demand and then will ask if you would like to run chkdsk on reboot in which I will choose yes but it does not run. It boots normally into Windows XP without any prompts or delays.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum! Sorry to learn it's because of your having trouble...

I'm not really familiar with the BSOD error you're experiencing, but if you have the Rescue & Recovery partition on you ThinkPad, boot into that by pressing F11 at the boot splash, and run PC Doctor. That should let you know if there are any hardware problems on your machine.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

Thanks for the reply.

I will give that a try and post back the results.

Suspect # 1 : hard drive

Suspect # 2: RAM

Download and burn (as an ISO bootable file) a copy of PC Doctor for DOS from here:

http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc ... ty48ww.exe

Boot from it.

Run memoryand hard drive tests for starters and see where that gets you.

At the moment I'm running the IBM PC Doctor from the HD or rather using the F11 boot up option. Would running PC Doctor from a CD be any better or different then running it from the HD via F11 ?

Thanks alot for the reply.

I always run it from the CD, since it gives me an opportunity to test the machine with no OS installed...and decipher whether a problem is hardware or software based...

Probably would make no difference. I don't think that the hard drive diagnostic would change that much between versions. The main purpose of using a boot CD of PC Doctor is that it can run if the hard drive is unbootable.

Looking around the net with Google, I turn up this from the horse's (Lenovo) mouth: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-59108

Thanks for the reply to everyone.

I ran all hardware test last night and all passed with no fails. Thanks again rkawakami for the links provided. What I have decided to do is to uninstall the Rescue and Recovery software to see if the BSOD disappears. Then I will try reinstalling the software to see if the issue remains asbsent.

Thanks alot for the replies.

Thanks to all.

I just wanted to update this thread on my progress. I forgot to mention that FF 4.0 was BSOD also every time I would start it up. The crash dump file would again indicate that the ibmfilter.sys was at fault. So what I did was following the link for the threads found by rkawakami suggested that I update the Rescue and Recovery Software by IBM. I did that by first uninstalling the software then trying FF which worked this time without fault. I then proceeded to iinstall the latest version of Rescue and Recovery from the IBM site. So far so good no BSOD after trying FF again and several other applications.

Will post back if we run into the BSOD again but I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Thank again to everyone

Does anyone know how the memory upgrade on this IBM T42 2378-FZU works ? We opened the compartment on the back of the laptop and noticed there was no SDRAM or SO DIMM installed. That is where the manual indicated that you will need to remove the keyboard on the back in order to upgrade the memory. From what I have learned there are two SO DIMM slots on this laptop. What we would like to know is can we simply install a 1GB SO DIMM DDR into the available compartment on the back and increase the RAM to 1.5GB since it already is running with 512MB of RAM. We want to increase the RAM on this latop to over 1GB or more if possible.

Thanks for the help

Yep.

Just slip a 1GB DIMM in the open slot and you're golden.
