Need help to choose a WWAN card

#1 Post by Tasurinchi » Thu Aug 04, 2011 4:14 pm

Hi! My X61s has no WWAN card so I'd like to buy one, first thing I did was to check out the good 'ol HMM. I see different options, which one would be the better option?

1- Sierra Wireless EV-DO Wireless WAN Mini PCI Express Adapter (FRU 41W1177)
2- Sierra Wireless MC8775 PCI Express Mini-Card (FRU 42T0835)
3- Sierra Wireless EV-DO Wireless WAN Mini PCI Express Adapter (FRU 42T0863) (same description as 1?)
4- Sierra Wireless HSDPA (MC8775) (FRU 42T0901)
5- KDDI Wireless WAN Modem Adapter (FRU 42T0909)

There were more models with descriptions like "Vodafone", "Cingular" and so on that I did not put in the list since I guess these are cards locked for the provider. I'd preferd an "unlocked" card.

Thanks a lot in advance!

T

Edit: typo with item 2- & 4-

The "native" card for an X61s is the Lenovo-branded Sierra Wireless MC8775, not MC8755.

Personally, I'd get a Dell-branded (or un-branded) Ericsson F3507g (they're cheap as chips on eBay and other sites), mod your X61's BIOS to remove the whitelist, and use that. It's quite simple and a lot cheaper than a Lenovo-branded card.
Need help with Linux or FreeBSD? Catch me on IRC: I'm ThinkRob on FreeNode and EFnet.

Code: Select all

Current laptop: X1 Carbon 3
Current workstation: none

Thanks EOMtp and Thinkrob for the help! Since I applied the BIOS hack to remove the SATA-I limitation (and the whitelist as well) I will then go for the Ericsson model (or the cheapest I can find).

Cheers!

Sorry for bumping this old thread.
ThinkRob wrote that it is simple to make f3507g work on X61.
I have also dell-branded f3507g and unable to power it on on my X60t.
Flash BIOS succesfully, install different drivers (some could not be installed due to 23000 authentification error) but trouble still not resolved.
Thanks in advance.

You need to tape Pin-20. See below:

Question about AT&T modems that factory installed into X61t 7762-WPY.
Does this modem support 3G or CDMA only?
What is the exact model of the modem?
Asking because seller does not respond to my requestю
Thanks in advance.
