Hi Erik,
Generally it is not because of daily use but rather when you need it, and I have seen my RAM at over %60 in certain cases, and mainly I would hope that I could contribute to video graphics more rather than programs because converting AVCHD videos and editing them is a lot slower than I expected it to be on X220. AVCHD manipulation easily takes up almost all of ram since each file is well over GB in some cases. I am wishing now that I went with W series and got 2GB dedicated nVidia, but now I know what my next Thinkpad will have.. Even if it means I will have to give up the very nice 12.5" form factor, which is what I love most about my thinkpad.

I got 2 x 8GB modules yesterday from Ebay, and installed them in my x220, it worked fine, no problem at all, x220 detected 16GB at first boot.

Yes, I believe it was proven earlier that it can be done, and looked like limit due to non-availability at the time that spec was listed on website. Now we see them cheaper and cheaper.

Yes, this is a common issue when memory standards change. The system manufacturer only posts the limit that they have tested since higher-density modules were not available at release. They tend not to update the original specs/docs after that unfortunately (even after they release BIOS updates specifically mentioning compatibility with higher-density modules).
Current Thinkpads:
X31, X40, X61T, X61, X201, X220 (i7 IPS), W520 (2720QM/2000M/FHD), T440p (i7-4800MQ/GF730GT/FHD)
Dells: Latitude C840, Precision M70, Precision M4400, M6400 (WUXGA), M6600, M6700
Daily driver: Dell XPS 13 w/Kaby Lake+Iris Pro+TB3

Actually at the time of X220 launch 16GB of RAM was already available. I don't know why they opted out. When I bought mine there was only 16GB at 1600MHz or 8GB at 1833MHz aftermarket. Now there is 16GB at 1833 aftermarket, BUT it will run at 1600MHz. I have been running on 16GB since I got my X220 without a problem.
