How to install a ZIF SSD in a T23 (PIC Warning)

#1 Post by Harryc » Mon Aug 15, 2011 3:55 pm

I purchased a ZIF type 1.8" Samsung SSD to put in a T23, along with a ZIF to IDE adapter card and ribbon cables. The Samsung SSD is a bare card with no case. I searched the web and found only one solution. See this link - http://en.esskabel.de/adapter/datasheet ... 25-case/72
Unfortunately that case is not commercially available at a consumer level. So I have a regular T23 HD caddy, the card, and the adapter on hand. Any ideas about how I can install this so it doesn't jostle around or short out on something? Other supplies on hand...Kapton tape, thick high voltage rubber tape, foam rubber of varying thickness, rubber rails from a T6X caddy, glues, etc.

RBS, thanks for the links. They want 59 Swiss Francs. That's USD $75 plus shipping to the US (if they even do that). I didn't pay that much for the SSD, and it's $25 more than I paid for the entire T23. :). Any other ideas?

You could always hot glue it to the caddy, that's what I did with a CF2IDE and 16GB CF in my T20. The tricky part is getting the height right on the adapter to plug into the laptop. The hot glue removes easily enough and in my case the CF card is not attached, just inserted into the CF2IDE.

Reporting success. I cloned Linux Mint 9 from the old HD to the new SSD using Clonezilla Live. Painless and perfect. I highly recommend Clonzilla Live for folks cloning Linux drives. As a side note....it's really eerie having a totally silent T23 ;).

Now all you need to do is relocate those leds to the hd cover on the side of the laptop... blinkenlights are always cool :P

ZO RELAXEN UND WATSCHEN DER BLINKENLICHTEN.
(Also: please keep still and only watchen astaunished the blinkenlights.)

The leds would hotglue nicely behind a couple of holes drilled into the cover just slightly smaller then the diameter of the leds. Wouldn't take much soldering skill at all :)

Thanks for the idea. It's a little too R2-D2-ish for my taste, but I'm sure someone will try it. 8)
