#1 Post by rocampo » Wed Aug 17, 2011 8:34 am

i have recently purcahsed the thinkpad w520 and wanted to increase ram to max...i believe the max supported is 16GB, if so do i add one 8GB stick or two 4GB? or if it is higher i still only wish to add 8GB at this time, should it be 1 or 2 sticks?

Since it's a quad core you should have four slots. If you want to get up to 8GB you can do 4x2GB or 2x4GB. The latter seems better if you want to upgrade in the future as you'll have open slots.

I thought the max was 32GB?

The max is 32GB. Have any of you priced out 8GB sticks of RAM recently?

Brand new Crucial is only $20 more at $400 for 1 x 8GB stick. If you seriously want that RAM it seems to me that the Crucial is the way to go at this time.

Note those modules are only DDR3-1333. They don't seem to have 8GB (or even 4GB) DDR3-1600 modules.
