(702) 235-8853, on the (message) below re mistyping the password for Window now cannot get into it...

Admin edit.. here is michaels original post:
intprosecutor wrote:Can you help me get around the windows password? I was setting up a new Tpad T43 I just bought from Bill Morrow, and when setting the fingerprint reader, it said I should do a password, for both the recovery & for windows...I did my usual one, but then when rebooted during software installation, I found that my normal one is not the right one. I assume I mistyped (I was jetlagged, I am an idiot) and thus now need to get around it.

Thanks that I did not do the harddrive password. But the windows/recovery password now is something I don't know!

Help. I have a conference at NDU tomorrow -- can someone point me to where on web the steps a non-familiar guy can use to get around the window password so I can get back into windows and this time carefully reset?
Please contact me at hartmannm@un.org or intprosecutor@yahoo.com. Thanks for any help.

I cannot help with the windows password, but if you need the data, get a linux LiveCD (Any livecd should do, most people use Knoppix) and access your data from there.

If it is just the Windows password that needs resetting then this works very well;

XP is NT-based, so this should in theory work.

James, the subject would probably be willing to drive up to Balto if you could help him.

I'm racking my brain as to who is in the DC metro area that could get him up and running

There's 7 or 8 members on here that list their location as DC. Also, has a note gone out to the mailing list? Bruce, maybe?

Never mind, I sent a note to the list.

Yes, but we need one with IT abilities, not just nearby.

No, but Bill transmitted a general Mayday to a select few.

One of them listed his/her occupation as network admin, I think.

Yeah, I got the mayday, but I didn't know who all it went out to.

As sine has said, the ntpasswd reset disk is what you want, it will work on XP as XP is just NT 5.1, Windows 2000 NT 5.0. It's a linux boot disk that edits the sam files. Just follow the text prompts.

of course you will need a bootable floppy drive.

Also I found you had to download the older version. This has worked on all systems with Windows NT 4 Workstation, 2000 Professioal and XP Home and Professional for me.

Just read the questions and follow them, you can't go wrong.

There is a downloadable ISO image that creates a bootable CD. This utility works fine on XP as others have noted.

I used this, made bootable CD and tested on 2 of my machines. T42 and A31p. IT worked flawlessy.

However when I used this on the T43, it would not show the partitions, and I cannot proceed any further. We both have windows XP SP2.

The only difference is that the two machines that I tested and had worked were clean install version of XP.

I am thinking that the factory preinstalled verion that IBM uses does not work with this method.

If anyone has any further ideas please let us know. Also if anyone knows around DC where he can go to get this fixed that would be wonderful as well.

Thanks.

James tried the cracker not working

#20 Post by intprosecutor » Sun Apr 03, 2005 10:06 pm

James was good enough (see post above) to come and try his CD to crack...must be a problem with drivers being new? T43?

If ANYONE can help -- or you know any DC area (I will taxi during the conference) IT folks/expert hacker who can get me my mistyped password before my trip Wed. at 2 back to the airport and Kosovo, please let me know.

I have called IBM Easyserv they ordered the reinstall disks but 50/50 if they arrive before I leave. I put the password (upon the f'print registration's prompt) on Windows password and on Recovery password so cannot reboot and reinstall all...

I am an idiot. Appreciate any help. I can do user stuff but no DOS or other complex stuff...

Any company/experts in DC who I can visit on Monday or Tuesday?

Also I have no bootable floppy, but have a USB 80GB HD and the bios of the T43 will allow me to set that as a bootable thingie

Email is intprosecutor@yahoo.com as my hartmannm@un.org is not accessible now -- problems in Kosovo.

Best, Michael

PS thanks to James and Bill.

How about mounting the disk in a differrent machine as a second drive? Then you could get to the sam file that way.

Thanks again for the tips. The @stake is $600 wow. I need to now find another computer to do the swap to try it. But in a conference all day Monday, so if anybody knows somewhere in DC where I can taxi to and take the laptop Tues am or Mon. afternoon after 5 let me know. Thanks for all your attempts. But in this hotel, I don't have a burner, and only have James (he nicely left it) not working CD...

It it comes down to worst case senario where the Recovery CD does not arrive in time before he leaves.

I suggested to get a copy of windows XP CD, which I would be happy to send it to him (Use the COA on his computer), and use IBM software installer to install all the necessary softwares automatically.

This may have been a faster solution yesterday, and I did not take the Wondows XP Cd with me when I went to help him. I was overconfident that the restore CD would work 'cause it worked on 2 of my machines.

James, Michael, et. al.,

As I wrote in an email to Michael, $39 spent here: http://lastbit.com/ntpsw/Default.asp and access to a burner will get him up and running.

If you can reach the recovery console, there are some MS articles on getting around the password.

Look at: http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... -us;308402

'Bout [censored] time you got here Robert!

Want a free lunch? Drive over to Michael's hotel and straighten the poor guy out!

Although I have a lurking fear that there's more going on here than an OS PW. James (Daejokim) reported that he couldn't see the affected HD's partitions when he attempted to use NTPASS, which is highly suspect.

I wish I were closer to DC so I could throw the HD in my T40 and have a look at it.

NB Michael
and for the record: Robert has an [censored]-kissing on the Whitehouse lawn coming from your's truly after he helped me with an Ethernet/VPN problem I had that was driving me nuts. Listen very closely to any advice he might tender!
