T60 vs Z60 battery issue

#1 Post by roguetrooper » Thu Aug 18, 2011 1:43 pm

I just purchased a T60 battery from eBay, well it stated for T60 (FRU 92P1129) which turns out not to fit into the T60 as it was from a Z60 (apparently).

I am really loathe to return it as it was so cheap (and genuine) and....

It seems identical to a T60 battery except for a notch on the side that disallows it to "slide" into the T60. If this notch was "removed" I am sure it would fit perfectly both physically and via the connector (which seems identical as well of course).

If I do this will it fry the T60? More to the point is it even advisable to try?

Many thanks!

edited to say:
actually the the T60 vs Z60 batteries notches seem to be reversed (that is the notches are swapped from either side if that makes sense). That is the only difference - both otherwise seem identical and produce same voltage etc (according to the label).

Hi, what is the FRU P/N on the battery itself (not what was stated in the Ebay listing)?

92P1129 is the FRU P/N for a Panasonic 6-Cell battery for the z60m (see here: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloa ... D=PD002479 ) and it should fit a T60. As far I know all T60,R60,Z60 batteries are interchangeable, whether 14 ",15", widescreen or 4:3 standard. The z60t/z61t battery is in a category by itself.

New (not fitting) battery is:
FRU P/N is 92P1129
ASM P/N is 92P1130

This is an IBM branded battery, my old battery is Lenovo branded (as is the T60 partly) FRU 42T4504 ASM P/N 92P1138.

The T60 is a 14" SXGA Model. (2007-66G).

It simply will not fit because of the "reversed" notches!

I also thought that Z6X and T6X batteries were interchangeable!

Thanks for the link, the battery did come from a Z60m...

Looking underneath the T60, from above, on the right hand side of the battery compartment, at the base, their is a "small notch" that is blocking the battery, either removing this notch (seems flimsy) or simply removing the out blocking plastic on the battery and I know this battery will simply slide in smoothly and lock.

Could Lenovo have added this little notch so that it would not take the older IBM batteries? Just a thought.

I believe the battery power and connectors are the same.

If I try this can anybody tell me the worse that can happen? Assuming power source is identical?

Assume that it simply will not recognize battery due to the chip inside?

Thanks!

PS. Not given up on this yet :)

If anything, I'd try to remove the notch on the battery.
There can't be anything inside that notch.
This way your T60 remains 100% intact and worst case? You bought the wrong battery.
Just to be sure: verify that both have the same location for + and - symbols on the battery terminals.

the connectors are identical as is all of the battery except for the notch
I'm still trying to build courage to try it without frying my pristine T60

I just don't understand this notch issue. It seems a deliberate attempt not to deny the battery insertion because of a compatibility issue but because somebody somewhere decided that these batteries should not be interchangeable for marketing reasons.

It would be interesting to compare the sides of IBM vs Lenovo branded batteries, I suspect they will have different notch patterns that are utilised (since Lenovo took over) to restrict the interchangeability of batteries between T60/Z60 for marketing reasons.

I would be also interested if any early (100% IBM branded top labels at least) T60/Z60 have this little notch in the battery compartment (probably on alternates sides for both models) or was it added by Lenovo for strategic battery marketing purposes.

Thanks!

OK.

It works!

I filed the notch off the battery and inserted it. As the battery has a round outer edge it doesn't style exactly with the T60.

Power manager recognizes it and is currently charging it, and it works on battery power.

So.

Z60 batteries with a notch can be filed off and utilized on a T60.

I hope this helps somebody!

PS. unusually the battery capacity is around 80% of new (2005-11), however the cycle count is 385! Never knew a cycle count so high could maintain such a charge, especially when I see cycle count batteries of 50 with very poor lifetimes.
