WEIRD problem on T42, can you help?

#1 Post by lukkbox » Thu Aug 18, 2011 7:07 pm

hi guys, hopefully someone can shed some light on this ....

About a year ago my screen started to blink off, first it would last about an hour, then switch off, hitting the screen close button would bring it back for an hour, then it would go off again, anyways this time gradually decreased until it would flick off every 5 minutes or so, obviously this sounds like an inverter or backlight issue right?

So i ordered a new inverter and fitted it, same exact problem, 5 seconds of backlight, then off

So i figured it must be the backlight and it sounded on all fronts like replacing the entire lid was the way to go so i ordered one and set about fitting it, now the new screen is fitted, i dont get aNY backlight at all, not even 5 seconds, the graphics are all still there i can see them when i shine a torch on the screen

So i tried 3 more inverters from different sources just to make sure it wasnt that ... it wasnt, still no fix

So what on earth could be the problem?

Im getting graphics, but no light, have changed the inverter many times, have changed entire lid assembly, still no joy

what else could be the problem?

I miss my T42 :(

Please help if you can, thanks in advance for your time

Dan

The motherboard fuse that drives voltage to the inverter must be open. At least that would explain the present condition. What you were experiencing at first was most likely a bad CCFL (lamp). It's also a long shot, but still possible, that the replacement lid also has a bad lamp. If you can somehow confirm that the present lid works, by connecting it to another T4x, for example, then I think we are back to the open fuse on the motheboard.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

the only other machine i have to test it with is a t21, will that work? does it have the same connector?

thanks for any help!

No the connectors are different. It would have to be a T4x or R5x series machine to test with. However, if you disassemble the lid, you might be able to connect the T42 lamp leads to the T21 inverter just to see if the lamp will light. We know the new panel works in that it displays the graphics, we are just not sure that it's CCFL is working.

BTW, for fuse locations, search the forum for member poshgeordie. There is a link in his signature to some pdf documents that will be useful to you. One of them is T4x fuse locations.
