R61 bios beeps

#1 Post by DragTheLake » Fri Aug 19, 2011 3:22 am

when starting up my R61 nothing appears on the screen and i get 4 beeps then a break inbetween, this happens 4 times, i've saw things on forums saying security chip. memory problem, graphic card problem and motherboard problem but i havent saw anything which states what the acctual problem is i've just had 3 or 4 different things in which it could be, can anyone shed any light on this? can it be fixed? or is it completely Cream Crackered?

Cheers

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

The 4 short beeps, 4 times is generally the code for the security chip. The best advice that I can give would be to take the system apart and re-seat the chip. The Hardware Maintenance Manual will give the instructions on how to do this. Note that there's 3 different copies according to the size and type of the screen:

ref: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product ... MIGR-64200 (14.1" and 15" non-wide screen)
ref: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product ... MIGR-67760 (14.1" widescreen)
ref: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product ... MIGR-67859 (15.4" widescreen)

edit: Hmm.. reading the HMM seems to say that the Security Chip is soldered to the motherboard in the R61. If that's so, then you would have to replace the entire motherboard. Before you take that drastic measure, try re-seating the memory module(s) first and see if that helps.

ahh thank you for that mate, i had already opened the laptop up and removed the memory etc, i also gave it a clean but to no avail, if i could get into bios i could disable the chip although nothing happens on start up, originally i thought it was the graphics card but then after researching and your help on here i realised it was the security chip. it's abit of a joke having it embedded onto the motherboard when lenova know it's a common problem.

Anyways thank you for the help, i'm working as a it technician apprentice and the company i'm with use alot of thinkpads so expect to hear from me soon everyone!

Cheers

Bobby
