Just purchased from ebay (will receive soon) and would appreciate knowing how much memory I can upgrade to from 96mb and if I can speed up from 500mhz TIA

The I1200's RAM goes up to 128 if memory serves me right. If I'm not mistaken, my friend who has an I1200 has 128bm RAM. As far as CPU goes, to upgrade that, you'll have to replace the entire motherboard since the CPU is soldiered on.

64M built in, you can add a 128M dimm.

Thanks, will do. Only reason I wanted more was to put win xp on it to match my desktop. Would that be enough to do that? or will the win 98 that's on it communicate okay? Thanks again.

Yeah, because 64mb is the minimum. 128 is reccomended, however, you should do fine with what you have.

Somewhere on this forum is a post by someone who says they got Windows XP working on their ThinkPad 380ED which had a Pentium 166 MMX and 80mb RAM If that thing can run XP, your I1200 should be able to as well.

Thinkpad i1200 series takes 256MB PC100 DIMM. I heard a few success
stories. Of course this is beyond the IBM specification, so I cannot
guarantee your success. But it should be possible.

If you are thinking of loading WinXP, you will want to put as much
memory as possible. If you have or can borrow a 256MB DIMM,
just try and see what happens.

A few cautions.
The BIOS should be the latest, if not, first upgrade it.
The 256MB SODIMM i1200 can take must be composed of low density
chips, meaning that it has to have 16 chips in total.

Oops, I forgot one thing.
If you put a 256MB SODIMM into your i1200, the onboard 64MB memory
will be disabled and therefore the total amount of memory you should
see is 256MB, not 320MB. Do not be confused with the total memory.
If you see 256MB, that's fine.
