How to access RAM slot on N356S1 laptop?
How to access RAM slot on N356S1 laptop?
I'm sure this is quite the long shot, but I can't seem to find any "how-to" guides anywhere on-line. Does anyone on this board have any experience or ideas about this?
The laptop is totally unfamiliar to me. It's model number is N356S1, but there is no manufacturer name to be found anywhere on the machine! My web searches turn up Uniwill and Micropro as names of manufacturers that have used this model number. And the laptop look just like this old eBay listing:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Micropro-N356S1 ... 0703032831
It has only 256MB installed, and I can't find the RAM slots. There is no access door on the bottom, so I assume the slots are under the keyboard, but I'm don't know how to remove the keyboard. I'm pretty sure the bezel across the top of the keyboard has to be removed, similar to a Toshiba I was working on recently, but I can't find how to release the bezel. I'm afraid of trying too hard, and breaking something.
Anyone had hands on one of these that could give me a little guidance?

Thanks for the link Ray, but I had just read that thread before posting here. I guess it's helpful, but I can't tell where those three small compression tabs HarleyDude is referring to are located. Guess I'm going to have to put my glasses on and look a little closer.

Use a very fine screwdriver, and poke on the laptop-sides of the darker panel above the keyboard.
Or check on the top under the speakers, left and right, and in the middle, just above the keyboard.
Something is bound to 'give'.

Thanks for the support, guys! Putting the glasses on made a big difference! I could easily see the three tabs on the top edge of the keyboard. Pried them back, gently, and the keyboard tilted up and by pulling upward toward the LCD, it released four larger tabs on the bottom edge of the keyboard.
Tried a couple of PC2700 RAM sticks and it would not boot. Scrounged around a bit more, and found another PC2100 stick to add to what was already there, and it's working fine now. Also added a Atheros Wifi card while I was in there. It had an empty PCI slot and antenna already in the lid, so easy wireless upgrade.
Kind of an interesting old laptop. I'm always fascinated with the design of different manufacturers...

Re: How to access RAM slot on N356S1 laptop?
My only issue with these off brand laptops is sometimes it can be a pain to find the appropriate or a compatible AC adapter. That being said, I do agree with you on looking at the designs other manufacturers come up with. In the past I have seen some really neat stuff, some really scary stuff and some stuff that made me think it should be standard across ALL laptops.
Like backlit keyboards. God if I could have laser etched keys and ambient sensors with user define-able blue or red back lighting on my T43 I would be in heaven.
