New T420s wi-fi question...

#1 Post by SaberX » Sun Sep 04, 2011 7:15 pm

So my landlord just got a new T420s and he finds the wireless in it not very good at all. His older T60p B/G gets way better single.
Question is his new T420s came with the "Thinkpad 1x1 b/g/n",does this "1x1" mean it only has one antenna in it?
Or will the laptop still have the 3 antenna's in it but his choise of the low end 1x1 card only uses one of them?
My understanding is with the 2x2 cards like the Intel 6200 will have 2 antennas. And the 3x3 cards like the 6300 will have 3 antennas.

I'm guessing his problem with the very weak wi-fi in the T420s is the low end card.

Guess i'll be looking for a intell 6300 card.

It means the card can ony use a single antenna.

Probably, but as I'd never buy a 1x1 WiFi device, I can't say from my direct experience with **20 systems.

That seems highly likely to me.

thanks for the info.
I'm just waiting for my landlord to show up with the T420s so i can have a hands on look at it.
I'll take the bottom cover off and see just what card is in it and if there is 3 antenna's in the system or not...

I ordered my T410 with the 6300 and get great reception at home or on the road in hotels (which are usually pretty minimal anyway).

I just had a look at my buddys T420s. It came with the lowest wifi card you can get.The Thinkpad B/G/N 1x1 card.
But i looked inside the bottom cover where the ram and wi fi card and empty Mini-PCIe slot is , and it does have the 3 antennas in the system.
So now just have to get the Intel 6300 card and way to go.
