T60 no image when turned on

#1 Post by frankiepankie » Wed Sep 07, 2011 7:11 am

Hello,

I bought an untested T60 to tinker with, received it today and it turns on (LED's are lit, HDD is making some noises) but i get no image.

No image on the LCD, and with an external TFT connected and after pressing Fn + F7 still no image. I have RAM and HDD installed, and hear no beeps.

I also grabbed a flashlight and pointed it towards the screen, because maybe the backlight is defective, but i couldn't see any image on the screen, so i think the mainboard is fried.

The T60 is an 2007-VG2:
Based on 2007-CTO: T2400(1.83GHz), 512MB RAM, 60GB 5400rpm HD, 15in 1400x1050 LCD, 64MB ATI Radeon X1300, CDRW/DVD, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, 6c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro
It has a big scratch / dent right under the PC Card / ExpressCard slot, maybe this has broken the mainboard? I am definately going to take it further apart to clean it and check the mainboard, but maybe one of you could give me some tips to try getting it back to life ;)

It looks like either it fell down on something sharp (like a metal pipe) or it was lying on its lid, and something (like a metal pipe) fell onto the bottom.
Either way, you may have a broken/bent frame in/near the "dent-area", which could make a false contact, or the mobo is damaged.
Don't experiment any further until you have taken the mobo out, or have been able to inspect the damage closer.
Then power it up without RAM but with speakers connected, to see if at least you get 1-3-3-1 beeps for no-ram.

That fall may have caused some un-seating of various components (like LCD cable).
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

I have stripped the T60 down to the mainboard. The mainboard doesn't look damaged at all (hooray for ThinkPad sturdiness  )

When booting without RAM strips installed i indeed get the 1-3-3-1 beep. With RAM installed it does the same as in my first message: boots, but no image or beeps.

The mainboard is an FRU: 42T0120 btw.

Unless anybody knows the magic trick to get it back to live again, i think i am going to order this mainboard: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/IBM-LENOVO-T6 ... 500wt_1156 FRU 42T0116 which is Intel GFX, which is nice because of lower power consumption, which results in a longer lasting battery
