RAM Upgrade

#1 Post by ccookie66 » Thu Sep 08, 2011 5:09 am

Hello, my IBM ThinkPad T40 has 1GB of RAM right now. I want to upgrade to 2GB. Anyone know what info (size?) of RAM I need? Or do I just go on ebay and search "IBM ThinkPad T40 RAM"? I opened the little plate on the bottom that that had the RAM in it, and it had 512MB on the piece, I know there is another RAM slot under the keyboard (thanks to a nice guide I found). So I was just wounder how I could do this, thanks.

Well, it's either PC2100 or PC2700. What is marked on the current RAM?

If you take a look in the Personal Systems Reference, IBM ThinkPad Notebooks A, T, X, and G Series, 2000 to 2005 (withdrawn), May 2005, Version 291 (the tawbook) you will read about RAM for T40's:
Memory: 256 or 512 MB standard / 2 GB max / PC2100 266 MHz DDR-SDRAM / non-parity / CL 2.5 / two 200-pin SO-DIMM sockets / std mem in one socket / one socket available
My personal preference for T42/p RAM (1 GB modules, also usable in T40's) is Crucial with P/N CT12864X335 which you may e.g. get at Newegg (note the outstanding customer feedback!) or via eBay of perhaps via the Marketplace on this forum.

I think buying a basic T60 is cheaper than investing in (expensive!) DDR1 memory

Okay, the RAM I have is DDR PC2700. Now will this work? http://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-ThinkPad-T3 ... 1395wt_932

If I get two of those RAMs and put one in the slot under the keyboard and the other one on the bottom of the laptop, it will have 2GB RAM, right?

A couple of their EBay feedbacks for this specific RAM says it works ... yes you'd have 2GB total RAM.

I always get my RAM from http://www.crucial.com (use their system scanner)

I am running win7 on my t42 and having 2GB makes a huge difference

I have a similar wish for my T41p.

I live in Italy and can buy on Amazon.uk, but I don't know how to choose between those different prices for the specific P/N you suggest?
Any suggestion?

Hi, I'm justing taking on my mom's hand-me down t42, which I am enjoying greatly. I am doing this experiment with win 7 thin PC (which is free for 90 days) and turns out it is ENTIRELY A RAM BASED OS.
Long-story-short, today I got a 1gb SODIMM to boost it, and when I install it in either RAM slot, in combination with the original 512MB ram or alone, I get bios warning beeps; 8 beeps in a pattern. When I put back in the original 512 RAM it's fine. What's the requirements for this? must I match pairs? Why can't I just use 1gb in the standard slot?
Help is appreciated...

@achat_2:
Just buy the cheapest you can get, you'll be fine with those.
You can use either PC2100 or PC2700 RAM, they will both work.

@mdp:
the 1GB stick is faulty, that's why the laptop beeps: 1 beep-pause-3-beeps-pause-3 beeps-pause-1 beep (or 1-3-3-1 as we refer to it here).
The machine will beep the same if you remove all RAM.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Wow, faulty? Yep, that's exactly the tune it's singing. This is a PNY ram I got a staples. That would be my first ever faulty new ram chip. Such a thing happens? I'll bring it right back! upd8 u l8r.

It happens more than people realize. If you're still in need I believe I have a 1GB Pc2700 module left here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=97374 If not I know I definitely have some 1GB PC2100 modules. Used, fully tested and test driven in a T42. Guaranteed to work unless your system board is bonkers. I've sold loads of RAM on the Forum without a hitch. Some feedback here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... start=2250

What do all of you think is too expensive? I paid from $25 to $42 per module for genuine Kingston KTM-TP0028/1G which is PC2100 RAM 1GB modules for T40s and T30s. They work fine. I found them on fleabay, the more expensive ones were new - still sealed in their little Kingston small clamshell cases.

Granted, I can get new KTM-TP667/2GB modules for my wife's T61 for approx $31 each shipped free, but i guess we can't have it all.

For What Its Worth. Intel Pentium IV processors and above run at the slowest speed of the installed RAM. If you mix PC2100 (266MHz) with PC2700 (333MHz) you get 266 MHz. It does make a difference. I do not know about AMD, but assume they work the same
