The X41 and X32 are for sale now through my university but they have not posted a price on them yet but delivery shows 20 days. Pricing should come soon.

I would love to get one of these...I just wish they had the touchpad ;)

Edit: I just checked out the IBM site, they have a wait time of 20 days for the X32 and X41 with a price of $79,999.99 :)

TrustedReviews has a brief blurb on the X41:

Not a review though, only a survey of what the new model is all about.

Seems interesting. Also curious was the location of the fingerprint reader, but I'm guessing they had less of a choice with that than with the T series.

I still want a touchpad on it though ;)

I hadn't noticed that. My yes, that fingerprint-reader is in bizarre spot, isn't it?

About the touchpad, I'm lucky on that count. For whatever reason, I prefer the pointing stick, and I found the touchpad on the other models (T, R, etc.) distracting.

Now that the specs are out, I just need to decide how badly I want a new notebook versus that new desktop that I want to build. I can't afford both at the same time. At least, I don't *want* to afford both at the same time.

i think the fingerprint reader is placed where it is so it dousn't interfere with typing. think about it... how many times in a normal day does your hand even brush over that area? then compare it to how many times for the location of the reader on the T42/T43... 8)

The X41 specs are listed in the Tabook

ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pcinstitu ... tabook.pdf

Comparing to the X40 (2371) it appears the nominal battery life has decreased from 7 hrs to 5.7 hrs with the 8 cell battery.

Memory speed has increased about 20% from 333 MHz to 400 MHz.

As noted by others, graphics has changed from Intel Extreme Graphics 2 (64 MB) at 266 MHz, to GMA 900 (128 MB) at 200 MHz.

Rest of specs seem similar to current X40s with the M758 1.5 GHz processor.

Does the group think the memory and graphics changes are significant? I'm still within the 30 day window on my new X40 and could upgrade, though the price differential is not yet clear.

I think the 7hr figure does include the 1.1Ghz CPU where the 5.7hr is only for the 1.5Ghz cpu.

The GMA 900 is a significant improvement from the EG2 and is touted [by Intel] to be able to run some newer games like:
Prince of Persia* 2 (Ubisoft)
Zoo Tycoon* 2 (Blue Fang/Microsoft)
Medal of Honor Pacific Assault* (Electronic Arts)
Final Fantasy XI Benchmark* (SquareSoft)
But I would hold back on any hardcore games like Doom 3 and Far Cry. Also keep in mind that it can gobble up to 128MB of your memory so an upgrade would be advisable.

Here is a comparison of the two: [Specs taken from HardwareCentral]
GMA 900: 333MHz graphics core with four pixel pipelines @ 1.3 gigapixels/second
EG2: 266MHz graphics core with one pixel pipeline @ 266 megapixels/sec

Further benchmarks can be found at:
http://www.tomshardware.com/motherboard ... 75-50.html

Hopefully this will give you some insight as to what you want to do.

Hi everyone, I am also very interested in the graphics chip
in the new X32.

The information sources are not clear;

ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pcinstitu ... tabook.pdf (ATI)
Vs
ibm.com (GM900)
Vs
Phoning ibm (probably GM900)

Some sources say the x32 uses the 16Mb ATI chip, other
the 16Mb GM900 chip (dont know how its only 16Mb though)

I phoned IBM and they said wait till next week for further info.
