Multiple OS installation

#1 Post by zandric » Wed Apr 06, 2005 3:23 am

I need to configure my Thinkpad (t42) so I will have option to multiboot different OS (Win XP pro and WIN 98).

How I can do that?

I know that win98 should be installed first on separate partition and THAN win XP Pro. How to do that using supplied win XP pro (from service parttion)? Is it correct?

I dont want to destroy that, hidden partition.

Any advice would be apretiated.

Zoran

There are at least two ways to do this while retaining the PreDesktop area.

1. Use Partition Magic (or some similar tool) to shrink the main partition, install its boot manager, and install Windows 98 or whatever.
2. Use VMware and install Windows 98 as a virtual machine.

The first method is less expensive but less flexible in the sense that you run XP or 98 but not both. The second method is more expensive but allows you to run both machines at the same time (and then additional machines if you wish). I have used both methods and prefer the latter (but that is just my preference) ... JD Hurst

I have been runnig W98SE and upgraded to W2k via dual booting.

Put Partition Magic on first and created a second active partition on C:/ Partition Magic comes with Boot Magic which allows one to switch to the OS of your choice at boot time. I made the empty partition active and installed W2k to it.

Put another way, I have two C:/ partitions with a seperate OS on each. Only one can be active, the other is hidden. Botto Magic allows you to switch between active/hidden; or it can be done from within Partition Magic.

Windows 98 cannot look at an NTFS XP disk. To do what you want, VMware is a better way because you can use standard networked file sharing to see files on one OS from the other. ... JD Hurst

Hi

I just got my ThinkPad (T43-72U) this week.

Right now I've managed to dual boot Win XP Pro and Windows Server 2003.

Just wanted to mention that Acronis Disk Director, which includes Acronis OS Selector is a nice tool to resize partitions without destroying existing data, and switching between OSs.

I know its possible to share files between different OSs, but does anyone know if its possible to share applications (e.g. Visual Studio.NET, Firefox etc), or is this idea too far-fetched? =)

edit: I realized its possible to run the programs off my XP partition without any problems. Not really sure of the full implications of doing this yet. I guess if there are any I will encounter in due time.
