Hello, I was wondering what is the max RAM that I can install in a thinkpad R61 ? (8934A7U)
This is from the Lenovo Toolbox:
Manufacturer LENOVO
Product 8934A7U
Chipset Intel GL960/GM965/PM965
Southbridge Intel 82801HBM (ICH8M)
BIOS
Vendor LENOVO
Release Date 04/09/2010
BIOS Version String 7OETC4WW (2.24 )
ROM Size 2.00 MB
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7100 @ 1.80GHz (CPU:0)
Name Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7100 @ 1.80GHz

I currently have 3GB with windows XP pro, but was wondering if I put windows 7 64 bit could I go higher than 4 GB (I know that the OS supports more than that) or is there a limitation with the GM965 chipset ?
Anyone know ?
R61 RAM limit
Re: R61 RAM limit
According to both thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:R61 and thinkpad-wiki.org/R61, the R61 only takes up to 2x2=4GB of RAM. The Unofficial_maximum_memory_specs page at thinkwiki.org doesn't even mention the R61.atwood wrote: Product 8934A7U

But since according to thinkwiki.org/wiki/Intel_965 the R61 shares the very same Santa Rosa chip set with the T61, which definitely support 2x4=8GB of RAM (typing these lines on one right now), i am hard pressed to believe that the same shouldn't also apply to a R61, but nobody seems to have tried and made public the results yet.
And indeed, digging a bit deeper, i found the following thread on the German thinkpad-forum.de website which confirms from two users that they are both running 2x4=8GB RAM in their respective R61's: thinkpad-forum.de/threads/97433-8GB-RAM-in-R61-7742NCG. The last article in the thread mentions its author to have successfully used "2x Kingston KVR667D2S5/4G - 4GB PC2 5300 CL5 200-Pin S0DIMM" memory modules.
In your place, I'd try anything which was also reported as working configuration for the T61's mentioned on the Unofficial_maximum_memory_specs page at thinkwiki.org. Myself i am successfully running two Hynix 4GB SO-DIMM DDR2 PC2-6400 800Mhz 200pin CL6 memory modules on two different T61's bought from a reputable German seller in this very eBay auction cgi.ebay.com/350304272568 (i paid some 10,- EURO less than the advertised price after some negotiation).

Re: R61 RAM limit
Except the R61e/T61e all other T61 machines should accept 2x4GB RAM.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
