Which Gobi 2000 for x120e?

#1 Post by Du@lB00t$ » Mon Oct 10, 2011 6:07 am

Does it matter? I'm new to my x102e, but have seen posts about BIOS-controlled hardware checking (white-listing) which in some cases prevents recognition or operation of a non-Lenovo branded mini-PCIe card. Does this apply to the Gobi 2000?

I'm looking for one that WILL work with my US-version x120e and which will ALSO support both US and European/Asian 3G frequencies.

So far, I'm unclear if ALL Gobi 2000 modules support US (well, AT&T at any rate) 3g AND European 3G, or if only some do, and equally unclear if I can purchase any Gobi 2000 which meets my 3G requirements and expect it to work w/o a problem.

Advice appreciated.

Many thanks.

I bought a US x100e in aug2010, with a Gobi2000 preinstalled. It came with a AT&T SIM card, which I never used/activated (3G data plans in US were(still are?) way too expensive to even consider).

I used the Gobi2000 in EU, with 3G/UMTS operators (it's unlocked), and it worked well (6Mbps+ DL, 1.6Mbps UL).

I moved the gobi to the new X120e purchased in spring 2011, and it worked in it as well.

So, IF the modem/wifi card/etc IS Lenovo branded, it will work as described.

If not, you'll have to modify the BIOS, which I chosed not to (i wanted to be able to track Lenovo's bios updates, and not have a chance to get a bricked laptop).

Also, the GPS worked decently fine on the unit, but don't try to get a fix indoors, or you'll have a lot of waiting to do !

You can find Lenovo branded Gobi2000 on ebay, or you cand order directly from Lenovo, amz, etc.

Hardly an user who live outside the US will ever use the CDMA connectivity. Even if traveling in the US, GSM is the more obvious choice.

So if you don't specifically need the CDMA connectivity I suggest to buy a lenovo branded ericcsson or huawei card, definitely cheaper.

You can find the part numbers here:

Often other Lenovo card, unlisted in the X120e HMM, will work too, but if you want to be 100% sure you should chose between the listed models (or check the forums for previous experiences).
