Does anybody know if/when a new T series pdf catalog comes out for april, or when IBM will update their general website with all of their current models? Im mainly curious if they will have a preview for may models like they had for the april models in the march catalog.
T43p 2687EJU, 512+512 ram, 2ghz, 15 in UXGA, V3200, MultiBurn, ect.

This new BIOS allows me to change the model number of my T41. I am somewhat certain (75 percent) that this function was not available in earlier BIOS versions, so this is a good thing. I don't need to change my model number, but otherwise, the BIOS update completed successfully and all is well. ... JDH

Um....I don't see the update for the T30. Where are you finding this?

The last bios allowed you to change model number as well (but the default is also hard-coded as it allows you to "reset"). Still not quite sure what the reason for this was...
IBM ThinkPad T42p (2373-7XU): 1.8GHz/1024MB, 15" UXGA, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.

If a thinkpad is field-upgraded with a different ultrabay device, hard drive, etc.., then wouldn't this allow the model number to match the physical configuration?

That model number could, in turn, be the key that the Thinkpad software updater uses to download updated drivers.
Apathy is on the rise, but nobody seems to care.

I wonder if the latest BIOS has any affect on the fan when the machine is plugged in (on AC), I'm currently using an older version which supposedly was better, now that I see microcode update in the fixed list, tempted to update :)

It may be possible that fan issues are not entirely BIOS issues. I have my T41 directly beside a client T30 (that I used to own and sold to them). The fan in the T30 is and always was vastly noisier than my T41. Oddly (not really, perhaps) the T30 had the same noise level as any prior ThinkPad, so when I got the T41 it seems (and always seemed) to be whisper quiet. At this instant, I can hear the T30 and background noise. I cannot hear my T41. So while the BIOS did not change anything, there was nothing on my machine to change. ... JD Hurst

I think it's a little weird that the fan still runs when the temperature is 39 degrees while being plugged in, but when I unplug it the fan stops after a minute. While being on DC, the fan only starts when temperature exceedes 43 degrees, on AC it's rarely off.

Hi,

I've updated to the new BIOS version this morning without a problem.

I'm running a lot of video encoding lately and now on my T41p, so the CPU is running at full speed.
The CPU temperature reaches a peak at 78 degrees and the fan started a weird behaviour toggling the rotating speed at full and shortly down a little and so on. It didn't have this behaviour before.
I don't know if the new BIOS is causing this. It's a little irritating.

Has anyone experienced this after the update?

R51 new bios

#14 Post by vovan » Sat Apr 09, 2005 2:46 pm

To mad_medic77:
I have R51 and today I also update my bios to 3.15 from 3.13.
Behaviour of my fan not have changed.

From AC adapter, with FULL CPU PERFORMANCE:

When I start something with 100% cpu load temperature reaches about 73-74C and fan start rotate about middle speed. Temperature about 73-72C. When I close application (0% cpu load) temperature go down and about 63C fan stops. And temp go up again.

Temp graph with 0% cpu load,AC adapter, FULL SYSTEM PERF looks like:

..........................................................................................................
-73C.....................***............................................***.......................
.......................***.....***..................................***.....***.................
..................***..............***.........................***..............***.............
.............***........................***..............***........................*** ........
-63C.***..................................*********.................................***....
.............................|Fan start...............|Fan stop.......|Fan start.............
.........................................................................................................
With 100%:
.........................................................................................................
-75C...............**...............................................................................
.....................*...***.........................................................................
-73C............**........***....................................................................
.................**..............**************************************...
...............**.....................................................................................
............**........................................................................................
-63C.**............................................................................................
.......................|Fan start

cute vovan!
Don´t tent me asking you what do you do for a living... :D
X220t IPS but but a bit unhappy with it
T60p 2007-93U 1600x1200 IPS (T42p is an overall better machine though. Lack of new IPS Thinkpads keeps me buying these older models!)
T42p 2373-KXU 1600x1200 IPS (The best ever!!)
A20p 2629-6UU 1400x1050 (My first Thinkpad!)

@ vovan:

Thanks for your input and the efford to make this graph.

I took a plunge and downgraded the BIOS back to 3.14 and noticed that the fan behaviour is the same as with the 3.15 BIOS. So i guess I was wrong, that the fan behaviour changed after the BIOS update.
So I'm back to 3.15 again.

To mad_medic77:

Have you same fan and temperature behaviour?
In closest future I will prepare screen shots of MobileMeter with temp. graph. I hope it should help someone.

Thanks,
Vova

to vovan:

The temperature and the fan behaviour is the same with the 3.14 and the 3.15 BIOS.
Normal temperature with toggling speed and mostly 800 MHz is around 48°C. The fan is constantly running, but not hearable. Under rising load the fan speeds up around 52 - 54°C and goes back to slow at 50-49°C. Maximum temperature is 76°C with constant full CPU speed and of course full fan speed. Still comfortably silent compared to my former Dell Inspiron 8200. :D I love my Thinkpad! :P

My fan and temp behaviour another. With high performance - 1700Mhz,
and 0% CPU load fan periodically turn on/off like in picture and temp graph like 63->73(fan start)->63(fan off)->73(fan start)->63->73......

I does n't know why in idle mode CPU become warn to 73C.

But fan is always work in low, middle speed.
On only in full speed with 3D games (intensive using of video card).

Thanks,
Vova
