Will the 56W AC adapter work with the T42?

#1 Post by tronic » Wed Apr 06, 2005 6:40 pm

I know for sure the 72W AC/DC adapter will work with the T42; what's less clear is if the 56W AC adapter does.

There's no list of specific models that works with the 56W AC adapter that I saw from a quick look around, and wanted to check because newer laptops seems to be hotter and draw more power (processor, 7200 RPM HD, etc) than the older ones.

I rather like the 56W form factor, but if it's not compatible with the T42, then so be it. :)

It will run a T42, the problem arises when it's used to run it AND charge the battery at the same time. The 56W units just don't have the HP!

The 56watt adapter ships standard with the T43 Thinkpads now. It will run the computer and charge the battery without any problem. I tend to prefer the size and compact nature of the 56watt adapter versus the larger bricks. My thinkpad with a 9 cell battery has a capacity of about 78wh on a full charge. The fully charged 9 cell battery will run slightly more than 5 hours under normal operations.

78 / 5 = 15.6 watts per hour actual drain

56 - 15.6 = ~40watts per hour still available for charging

The only benefit the larger bricks will provide is a slightly faster charge time. Also take note that the T43s tend to burn slightly more power than the T42s so with the T42 you should have more available watts for charging.

Jhem,

I ordered my T43 through EPP and received the 56 watt adapter. You can see the unit I purchased in my signature. I am more than happy with the size of the 56 watt adapter!

Are you sure it's 56? My recent t42p (Jan. delivery) came with an AC adaptor that is smaller then the older 72 watt model I was familiar with - but it is still 72 watts (16v x 4.5a).

The two T43s I purchased, 1x14" and 1x15", both came with "08K8205 AC ADAPTER - 72W 2-PIN ". They arrived on March 21st and yesterday.

I believe if you DID get 56W it was an error. Just got off the phone, and they said the 56W was not supported/recommended with that machine.

But the T43 is rated to draw up to 4.5A and the 56W brick simply can't supply it!

Call IBM and get the correct 72W brick, regardless of how much you like the size of the 56W brick.

Your 56W power adapter may work, but if you consistently over use it, it may fail prematurely.

my compter is:
T42s 2373-K5H
1 GB RAM
7K60 Hitachi Travelstar HDD
1.7 GHz Intel Pentium M (Somana with 2 MB cache)

This past 6 mths, I've been using my old IBM Thinkpad 560's power adapter (35W, 2.2A, Part No. 12J1443) with no apparent ill effect on above computer for occasional use (secondary power supply for limited use at home).
Check emails, type up misc. office document, excel use, etc.
Just light use...

BUT just last week, i used my T42s very heavily for an entire day (burn my CD's into MP3, while doing MP3 edits of my tapes at the same time (all personal materials), and charging my 6-cell battery at the same time.

At the end of the day, this old power adapter nearly failed (overheat, started to have a burning smell--i disconnected it immediatedly), possibly due to power over-draw (RAM, CPU, HDD, CD-ROM, battery recharging all in use constantly for while day).

This old Thinkpad 560's power adapter (35W, 2.2A, Part No. 12J1443) still works--but only my wife's T40 with occasional use now.
It simply don't work on my T42s anymore (maybe the overheating damaged it's power output permanently).

Just for everyone's reference, for what it's worth...

May not be good for the Thinkpad either, because of the unpredictable way that it may fail.

Trusted Reviews of the T43 that clearly showed T43 came with the larger 72W power adapter:

(look at the side screenshots, which can be enlarged)

Just following up. My T42 (2378-R4U) shipped with the 72W AC adapter, but that's all right. It still looks pretty good, size-wise. I'm happy with it.
