RE: Overclocking x301
RE: Overclocking x301
Hey all,
I have actually 2 machines x301, one with 1.6 processor and the other one iwht 1.4. Has anyone ever done overclocking and can share the experience?
I love the machine, but with windows 7 (im not doing any graphics, like games etc, absolutelly not purelly office stuff), I still feel that machine is a bit slow, sometime it would hang on explorer etc. So i want to try to squeeze every bit of juice out of it, I ve already installed intel ssd 2nd gen, i guess that helped a bit,but can we do anything with the processor ?
Cheers all!

Re: RE: Overclocking x301
I have no experience overclocking laptop CPUs.
However, I also don't think that the slowness you experience (hanging on explorer and such) is the least bit related to CPU speed.

Re: RE: Overclocking x301
Well, how old is the install? You might want to try a fresh one (though I'm assuming you did this with the 120GB Intel SSD).
What I'd do is download ThrottleStop and see what's happening- if the machine is throttling back or not (and if so you can stop it- case in point is the Alienware M11x which has similar problems but I don't know if the same thing happens with the X301).
To download it and to see the guide, click here.
You might also want to take a look inside at the heatsink/fan assembly- you might be clogged with dust and that may make the machine throttle back.
Other than that, I can't really suggest anything else- other than to upgrade to a T420s or similar with a standard-voltage processor.
If they're in good condition, selling the two machines can net you enough for a T420s.
It might take a while to sell them, though, but if your price undercuts or breaks even with a lesser-spec'd machine you'll get rid of them faster (on fleabay it looks like you can net, oh, I don't know, 600 bucks apiece if not more).

My X301 all had a new fan due to overheating after 2 years of constant use. Download Tpfancontrol and check the GPU and CPU temp.elvair wrote:Hey all,

The X301 can be overclocked to 2,13GHz respective 2,4GHz when a SU9600 is in use.
