While PowerBooks are great, they don't have workstation graphics. Best you can get is a 128MB Radeon 9700 in the 15 and 17", 64MB NVidia GeForce 2FX in the 12".
I have the 12" and the T42p, and as much as I love OSX and my "little" PB, for video the T42p blows the doors off the PowerBook.

You have to wait until Longhorn to make full use of the video card, right?

3D games, 3D graphics, OpenGL CAD applications... you can make plenty of use with it now

Sure, what I mean is: a lot of people say that MacOS.X is much more beautiful than Windows XP, but I think Longhorn should be alike.

Longhorn will be much nicer than XP, and may be as "pretty" as OSX, but it will still be Windows, will still have security holes necessary to be compatible with older software, and will still lack integration as it must run on all of the PCs out there.
It will still be the target of all those script kiddies writing viruses and worms. OS X has its problems too, just trying to say that Longhorn won't be the holy grail, it will just be the next Microsoft OS, nothing more, nothing less.

I like your statement. It is always a contradictary task for any computer system (including OS) design. You get something and you lose somthing at the same time. There is no perfection in the world.
To me, I like the beauty and elegance of MacOS, but it lacks the support for some commercial applications ( some CAD tool for chip design ).
On the other hand, I appreciate Windows because I can everything I need, but Windows has a lot of problems also.
Anyway, computer is just a TOOL, though somebody think it should be as perfect as an art, it is good enough as long as it fits my need. There are much better things in life, it is just a stupid machine......

Yeah, its a stupid machine, but they sure are fun. If I had to use only one OS, it would be OSX, at least right now. That said, I spend a lot more time on my ThinkPad than on my PowerBook IN SPITE of it having an inferior OS.
The reasons are precisely what you said, there are other aspects of computing than OS. OS X is delightful, and the PowerBook (the small one) is nice for what it is. It has a great keyboard, is small and light and gives deccent (3.5 hour) battery life. The problem is that the T42p has a better keyboard, a larger, higher resolution screen that makes movies look terrific, plays games that the Mac doesn't, and most important for me, has the TrackPoint.
Its those little things. The TrackPoint (I love the slot-loading PowerBook drive though) just makes using the computer more comfortable, and the screen and lightning-fast drive, processor and graphics make it more fun. There are things that go the other way too, like iChat AV which lets me use my iSight camera to videoconference with my family when I travel, in TV quality, far easier and better than anything Windows can do.

Hehe, actually most people select the OS based on the application they want to use, not the OS itself.
The ideal thing would to run MacOS on a Thinkpad
But I know, it is not possible, at least at present, Apple has no plan on this.

The applications are a dead heat for me. MS Office 2004 for Mac is nicer to me than Office 2003 for Windows, but not enough to really matter. Photoshop is about the same on both. Safari is much better than IE, but I use Firefox on Windows, which is even better (its better on Mac too, just doesn't feel "Mac-like").
There is no app that I use other than games that are only on one platform. Apple's DVD player is better than WinDVD 6, but I can't make my PowerBook region free (about 30% of my collection is Region 3). Its all trade-offs, but I could live on either platform without much difficulty.
I'm just glad I have enough money to enjoy both. I have my PowerBook when I want it to "just work" or to talk to my family when I travel, and I have my ThinkPad to play games and movies on. As for real work, whichever one I happen to have with me will do everything the other will.

Wait nine months and you might be able to pick up an nw8240 refurb. for 6/10 of today's MSRP (like many people did with the nw8200) from here,CoolDragon wrote:Just noticed that NW8240 is out, pretty powerful (something are better than T43p).

Also, while other machines can match the ThinkPad on the spec sheet, they can't in terms of build-quality and the little "Surprise and Delight" features.

I agree, I will never buy a Dell laptop, but HP does make some good laptops, or should I say "did"?
Let's wait until is really shipped and see what users say about it.

TPs aren't perfect, but they are a lot better built than the consumer machines. Other brands have good business models, but there is definitely a difference between consumer and corporate.
I totally disagree about features though. To get all the gizmos means havng a laptop that weighs 8lbs, which I will never tollerate. I like my T42p because it is one inch thick and weighs under 5lbs. Even that is pushing it on the size and weight for me, but to get the comfortable keyboard and large-enough screen it is the smallest and lightest I can get.

I didn't say that behomths shouldn't be made, just that I have no interest in them whatsoever. I'd like something a bit smaller and lighter than the current T-series 14", but wiht an optical drive and at least a 13.3" screen.

Wrong. Road warriors do not want an additional 1 or 2 pounds, they want their machines to be LIGHTER, as light as possible.
The real question for highly mobile users isn't whether to carry a 5lb machine like a T series or an 8lb behemoth, but rather whether they can tollerate the 5lb weight of something like a T series or are willing to sacrifice built-in-drives and go to a tiny screen like on an X-series. It is a very difficult choice to make.
You (Batuta) might be willing to truck around an 8lb laptop, but real road warriors laugh at such machines. When IBM shaved 1/2 lb from the T2x series on the T4x, road warriors were the people who cheered. Lighter weight is why we tollerate the 9.5mm drive and its limited choices, and weight is why 14" T-series greatly outsell 15" models and command higher resale values.
The 14" T series is simply the largest and heaviest machine that a true road warrior can get away with. It is the extreme top-end in both size and weight. Those huge 8-10lb comsumer monsters with the gizmos and doo-dads aren't what frequent travellers want, they are what marketing departments know will attract the eyes of the "home" user at Best Buy. For real road warriors, those things are just another annoyance when running across the airport after two other flights that morning.
That doesn't even get into use ON the airplane, IN the car or AT the coffee shop. Those big 15~17" monster machines take up too much space to use in crowded confines, make too much noise and their batteries quit before you can even get your work done (or watch an entire movie). No thanks, I'll pass.

Batuta and AsiaFish, can't you guys settle this over PM's?
I really like the clean and polite way people conversate in this forum, and would very much apreciate if it stayed that way. No offence, of course.
Topic:
This HP actually looks good, by design. And in IMHO it has the ATI chipset the T43p should have had from the beginning. But I would still prefer the T43p over the HP. A girlfriend of mine bought an HP laptop for work at school. It felt like something off the assembly of Fisher Price. Very plastic'ish and quirky. But the specs where okay, and the machine was great for her needs. As mentioned, I would however throw the extra cash and buy a Thinkpad, although it may not be the rational choise. Ignorance is bliss..
Btw, pardon my bad gramma.

No, I didn't think that any of you do this thing for the fun of it. My point is, that alot you and Asiafish's conversations are on a personal level, and should perhaps be "finished off" over PM. Although some good argumentations are put on the table, it still doesn't belong in a forum like this. This is my opinion, and I could of course be wrong.Batuta wrote:Torque:I don't want to settle anything by no means with asiafish.Batuta and AsiaFish, can't you guys settle this over PM's?
I asked him multiple times by now to just drop it and leave me the heck alone.
But like a fake $3 bill he follows me from thread to thread trying to pick a fight with me.
You think I like it to get topics locked all the time, just because someone feels like "High Noon" 24/7?
But if Asiafish is forum-stalking you, I would personally try to ignore it. But of course, I'm not to tell anyone how to behave in these forums. Again, these where just my 50 cents (uuh lingo
