My thinkpad collection

My first thinkpad was a T410, it was a nice machine but i cheated it with an Elitebook in the end. After a while, myself left with the taste of thinkpad in my heart, i came across a Thinkpad T40 offered to me for next to nothing and bought it. Asked for help from the community and got helped with all of my questions. The community, the affordibility, the cheap spareparts and moddability of thinkpads got me hooked to thinkpadding

Ever since the T40, i have been on the hunt for thinkpads whether in fleamarkets, online listings, local shops and i bought many and sold many. Sold many because i am not into collecting unless the device is in pristine condition, i can't sell a perfect machine with the fear of "what if i can't find again " , so i kept buying, assembling 2-3 devices to make a perfect one to my liking etc, regular stuff any thinkpadder usually does. I wanted to share my humble collection briefly. I listed the devices in order its value in my eyes. I happen to keep thinkpads with no pressure marks nor yellowish screen, i always search for used working batteries for my devices.

1- Thinkpad T23
Pentium 3 1200mhz, 1gb sdram, s3 supersavage 16mb, 14.1" xga, factory installed wifi, 64gb msata ssd, windows 2000.





T23 had some minor issues when i got it. non functional lid button switch, square white spot in the middle of the screen, dead battery, usual right side of the palmrest crack. I don't really know what is so special about T23 but it holds its place as my most beloved TP of all times. I was able to fix all of its issues, including the white spot in the screen, sourced two working batteries, i even imported 1gb sdram for it from china. It is running like a poem with W2K, quite snappy, great speakers and eventho the screen is just a TN XGA, its colors and brightness are so appealing to my eyes. The cpu p3m-1200mhz tualatin and graphics chip S3 brings me to the nostalgia train cause it was the first vga chip in my first computer. It is quite capable for the likes of Half-life, quake2 or 3. T23 holds its special place in my collection as a device that i would never consider parting ways. A true champion, mvp, king of the hill whatever.

2- Thinkpad T43p
PM 2.13ghz, 2gb ram, 64gb samsung ssd with adapter, 300mbps wifi n card, firegl v3200, windows 7



Bought this one from someone in another city, only saw some blurry photos of it before buying. I had no idea that it would have been in pristine condition. It only missed the hdd cover, had a small crack under the bottom housing that i was able to epoxy nicely and source hdd cover. Its screen is so beautiful to look at even by todays standarts, No issues with the lcd, perfect. it is always been a joy to use. Upgraded the cpu to 2.13ghz pentium m, 64gb ssd, it is sporting windows 7 fluently, It runs windows 10 nicely as well tho not as great as win7 for sure. Using it as a tv with pcmcia avermedia card, I am able to watch youtube at 1080p with potplayer, it has respectable graphics power for games until 2005-06. It is a keeper and every thinkpadder should have one of these beasts in their collection.

3- Thinkpad X32
Pentium M 1.7ghz, 2gb ram, 16mb radeon 7000, 12.1" xga, 64gb msata ssd, windows xp





X32 was like a myth to me cause its rarity is repeatedly posted by thinkpadders, so i never thought i could get my hands on a X32. Lol, I got not one but two X32 here and surprisingly both are pristine like new condition. I couldn't find any faults with them and I usually do. They came with X3 docking stations with %90 life batteries. Being a fan of X41 series, performance of X32 blew my mind. X32 has real cpu instead of the low power cpu variants of X40 and X41 series. These little fellas could easily had 2nd place in my list if i wasn't sentimental about my UXGA T43p

4- Thinkpad T61
Intel T8300, 4gb ram, 120gb 840pro ssd, 5300agn, 14.1" 1280x800 display, x3100 vga, windows 7



I got two of these 14.1" widescreen T61's. The first one was X3100 variant with perfect working condition with a flawless bright, nice contrasted 1280x800 panel. It had some cracks at the side of the bottom housing and palmrest, no battery included. The second one arrived 3 days later, nvs140m variant with 1440x900 panel with some tiny pressure marks, no battery included.. NVS140m board had a strange issue where it auto powers up when connected to ac adapter. I wasn't able to fix it by replacing the dc jack or cleaning the board, good news it didn't have cracks with bottom housing nor palmrest. Made a thread about these recently and deciced to assemble a perfect INTEL X3100 T61 and i did. It runs windows 7 super smooth, youtube in browser 1080p is not an issue at all, plays half-life 2 and unreal 2004 with maximum settings at 1280x800. Machine runs quite cool and silent as well cause i put the FX570m heatsink fan I still feel lucky to source a 9cell panasonic battery with %70 life for this device, it is a keeper in my collection when i need more computing power.

5- Thinkpad T42p
Pentium M 765 2.1ghz, 2gb ram, 160gb hm160hc hdd, 15" uxga panel, 128mb firegl T2, windows xp



Bought it yesteday, still so fresh in my collection. I always thought T42p was rarer than T43p over here. Its keyboard was missing like %90 of its keys. The screen had ink lines drawed with a pen possibly by a child who abused the machine. Cleaned the lcd with baby wipes, all lines went away, left me with a perfect UXGA screen, no pressure marks etc. Thing is running hot, i need a longfan for this device, if it doesnt help, i may replace pm765 with pm745. It is in perfect condition right now with no cracks or etc, runs with windows xp.

6- Thinkpad T60
T7400, 3gb ram, 14.1" 4:3 1400x1050, 64mb x1300, 5300agn, 120gb ssd, windows 7



Always on the hunt for a T60 sxga+ or T60p in good condition, got this device with T5500 cpu, upgraded straight to T7400,3gb ram, 5300wifi etc. It runs super cool with T7400, absolutely silent. I would have ranked this one better if the colors of its inferior samsung sxga+ panel were more lively. Still, it is a milestone in thinkpads history and a keeper, being my most powerful 4:3 Tp after all. Got a 6 cell panasonic battery with %80 life.

7- Thinkpad X41 Tablet
Pentium M 1.5ghz lv, 2gb ram, 32gb msata ssd, 12.1" xga ips panel, GMA 900, windows xp





I have always been a fan of X41 devices, eventough X41T isn't as much loved as a regular X41 by myself, i value this one because it is in pristine condition. Need a working battery for this one and unfortunately it is not easy to find a working one for cheap here.

8- Thinkpad 701CS













Got this one today, i am not into this kinda of old devices but the uniquness of the keyboard and rarity of one, let alone a working one. I am going to sell it buy more thinkpads to my liking.

9- Thinkpad T43
Pentium M 1.86ghz, 2gb ram, 80gb 7200rpm hdd, 64mb radeon x300, windows xp, 14" xga

Not much to say about this one, it is a nice machine but it is going to be sold to make room for other devices.

10- Thinkpad X41 halftop
PM 1.5ghz,2gb ram, GMA 900, no panel


This one will have its place upper in the list when i find lcd for it. It is super light and cute atm, i like it

I have a pristine A30p with uxga panel with dead mobo and a X61 with dead mobo that couldn't make it into the photos, maybe one day, i could get mobos for them. I also have two pieces of A20m with orange panels rusting in the attic. I am on the hunt for devices like TP 600x, X61s, G41, Z61p, T60p, T61p...

I have one of those impressive little machines myself. Well, it was impressive 15 years ago but its days of glory were short-lived, and now it is mostly a curiosity. Mine isn't in such a pristine condition, though - the lid has seen some wear and tear. I do have the IPS screen, and it can even run Win7 after some graphics drivers hacking, but it's best with XP.

The T23 is definitely my longest owned (since 2003) and most-used (for password-removal) Thinkpad.
I still got two of them in almost pristine condition and with working batteries (from T30).

The current favourite is my T440p.

As for T43 and X41 Series: both can be upgraded to SATA drives instead of IDE/PATA.

Thank you. There was a square white spot, it wasnt a pressure mark. I dissambled the screen. Cleaned the panel underneat and sanded the part of the lid at the spot mark was happening. Went away.


X32 such an awesome tp, i read about the misfortune of your x32 man. Seems like ips panel did more harm than good for it.

Yes big bro i am fully aware of those mods. However knowing myself, i am afraid to kill the device. I have been asking for a video tutorial about these mods, hopefully one day, someone would upload and i would feel the balls to do the satamod myself.

Got some additions to the collection,

X200tablet with 8gb ram and L9400 cpu, led screen.

T60 15.4 wide with superbright and and high contrast lcd and x1400 gpu, easily scores 5200 points in 3dmark03.

T61 14.1 wide with nvs140m gpu, 6300 points in 3dmark03

X60s with L2500 cpu, so mint condition.

And X61 with T8300


X41tablet gone to a new home.

Today, i had a customer visitor who was interested in my T42p. He saw the T43p near T42p and asked if i would sell the T43p instead of T42p. I told him that i dont think of selling the t43p but if he paid xxx amount of money, i could think.I didnt expect him to pay the price i asked but he just accepted it and bought my dearly T43p. I never thought i would let go of my t43p but the price was right and i couldn't mind nor retreat from my words. I also sold my T61 intel x3100 today it is a nice day.

The only thing i regret, i replaced the pm770 with a pm780 in t43p yesterday night, pm780 went away with no experiments. I have 3 pieces of PM770 tho none of them are 1 pm780.

Bought a direct equalivent of T410 which is dell latitude E5410. Upgraded to 8gb and 500gb ssd right away. Its display makes the t410/20/30 jealous. Well, it is no thinkpad..

The Latitude E5410 is NOT the equivalent of a T410! It's the equivalent of the R410 if it existed (I know it doesn't). Rather, the E6410 is the equivalent of T410. The difference between E6410 and E5410 are: the former is thinner, lighter, made of much more high end aluminium and magnesium materials (and has a real professional and stealthy design), has discrete graphics options, has quad core support, and has a hot swappable E-module bay (though E-module bay is much worse in flexibility than the predecessor D-bay anyway so not much to lose here). The E6410 also has backlit keyboard options which I don't think E5410 has.
Is the E5410 displays really any better than the T4x0 series? I have a E6400 with WXGA+ LED display and aside from it being much much brighter, I don't see it being much better otherwise, and I assume the E5410 uses the same screens as the E6410. (E5400/E6400 are 16:10 and E5410/E6410 are 16:9)

My E5410 has the 1440x900 display, it is very bright and contrast ratio is good. E5410 14.1 inch screen and has the very same guts as my old T410 which had 1440x900 display and intel gma gpu etc, same cpu,max ram is 8gb in both. T410 doesnt support quadcores either within or without discrete gpu planars. I dont really know why you point E5410 as a lesser laptop than T410. Is it just because it doesnt have a magnesium rollcage inside ? Manufactured in 2010 and no cracks of whatsoever in any part of the case, i really dont mind if it is plastic, magnesium or titanium as long as it doesnt crack. We all know about the plastic screwhole brittles in thinkpads which is sad and not top notch either.

Btw just after 1 only ONE screw, you are inside the laptop with FULL access to FAN, HEATSINK, RAM SLOTS, CPU, CMOS, BATTERY, WIFI etc... It is a much more convenient design to service than any thinkpads i can think of. I am on the hunt for an i7-640m for this lappy, already put my bluray drive in it.

The T410 had the 1440x900 (16:10) option, NOT the 1600x900 (16:9) as you wrongly indicate.
The T510 (and after that: T420/T520 etc.) already came with 1600x900, as the first 16:9 Thinkpad.

Nice collection.

I don't think I could fit all of my ThinkPads in one place even on my seating for 10 dining room table. I did have about 15 set up there earlier this year, while updating and re-imaging, but I caught too much hell from the boss lady, so I took all but 4 down.

Oh yes right the L series is kinda comparable. The E5410 traded aluminium and magnesium exteriors with plastics, just like how L412 traded carbon fibre materials with ABS plastics.

I am not very confident about the E5410 plastics holding up nearly as well as the carbon fibre reinforced plastics on the T410 (At least for the lid). I think giving it another 5 years and it will start to crack and lose screw threads too. The E6410 however is very unlikely to lose threads because the palmrest is not taking much structural support due to the magnesium bottom chassis.
The D5xx series that superseded the E5400, E5410 series had the "tri-metal" technology which had the magnesium inner frame. Don't see that on Dell's description for E5410 so I think they've dropped that.

The E6410 doesn't have one either, but that's because it has moved the framing to the exterior, making it feel robust on your hands, though in terms of the rigidity it is still much worse than the D630.
Compared to the T410 though, the E5410 lacks:
- Discrete graphics options
- Build quality, elegance and perhaps even motherboard quality
- Battery life
- High end Intel chipsets
Btw despite Dell not offering E6410 with quad core i7's, users have reported that with a BIOS update the i7-720QM is a drop-in upgrade (perhaps this is due to Dell discontinuing their 14.1" Precision models so Latitude packs the meat now), at the cost of tight thermal room to spare due to the downgraded heatsinks to make the laptops thin. Not sure if you can do the same with the T410.
Also, the one screw easy disassembly is present on all of E5x00, E5x10, E6x00, E6x10 series. It's there to correct the D630/D830 disassembly process which involves with taking the screen and the palmrest off to get to the heatsink (and motherboard removal on the D630 to get to the fan). Unfortunately the downside is that the panel is not very tightly held onto the rest of the chassis can make it feel less durable. And also in this case replacing the palmrest (i.e. if the black paint on the speaker grill wears off on the E6x00/E6x10 series) will require total disassembly.
If you are interested in docking, the E series docking stations are ABSOLUTELY everywhere on the used market! The reason why is that for all of the E series latitudes (Ex400, Ex500 to skylake E5570, E5470; Dell switched the high end numbers from 6xxx to 5xxx some time) share the exact same port replicators.
