Not comforting that responses are slow.
The 40 dollar shipping is scaring me, including the fact, that the customs might charge me for the returned disk.

Re: Kingspec 32GB SSD problem - wont boot/format or anything
Well. The process seems pretty straight forward. But the shipping costs are 222 DKR (40 USD, 30 Euros). I paid 600 DKR for the SSD. If the shipping costs are not covered/refunded by Kingspec, then I'm not sure it's worth the trouble and money.... Also because it might also cause troubles with custom...

Re: Kingspec 32GB SSD problem - wont boot/format or anything
How depressing... I am trying Active Killdisk at the moment. When trying to erase the disk, it states at the bottom of the screen: "Warning: Error writing sector XX on device Hard disk 0 30.0 GB" where XX indicates increasing sector numbers. Doesn't seem like it want to play along in any way. Progre...

Kingspec 32GB SSD problem - wont boot/format or anything
Hi I installed a Kingspec 32 GB SSD in my IBM X41 just before Christmas. Suddenly it began to act very slow in Windows 7 and decided to freeze. Rebooting have failed. Not even Safe mode boot. If I wait long enough at it trying to boot it gives BSOD with "Unmountable boot volume". I have tried using ...

How much did you gain by applying Arctic Silver instead of the original paste?

Removing screw head Haha.. Yeah, didn't think of that. Last time I wanted to disassemble the case, was for maintenance to change thermal paste on the CPU and clean the fan, maybe even give it a small droplet of oil. But is it possible to unmount the speaker used for these warning beeps? Regards, Ma...

Re: Has anyone tried an SSD in the X41? *PICS*
Yes, you'll have to live with the beeps. I thought that I actually had no problems with beeps while using it in the start with bios 2.09 and bios alarms all set to disabled... But now I realise, that I also have problems with the beeps. Dunno if it arrived after downgrading to bios 2.08 and then up...

Re: Using XP Mode in Windows 7 on X41?
Dual boot is not an option unless I make an extremly neat nLite of XP. I have 32 GB in total and wont waste 4-5 GB on XP just for modem. It's not the modem drivers that doesn't work with Windows 7 but it is MS-CHAPv.2 that is probably not supported by the server I'm calling. I will not need to call ...

Using XP Mode in Windows 7 on X41?
Hi everybody I have installed Windows 7 Professional on my X41 and couple of weeks ago I wanted to use Windows XP Mode on the laptop, but it didn't work. I think it was due to some graphic rendering, but I can't remember. I have just experienced a problem with Windows 7 and dialing up by modem, and ...

Re: Has anyone tried an SSD in the X41? *PICS*
FWIW, I was told that the KingSpec drives will get a firmware update with TRIM support by end-December. If it's true, then at USD100 for 32GB then I think it could be a good choice. As a side note, new SSD with JMF612 controllers are rumoured to be available soon. Should that then be appliable to a...

Re: 60GB SSD 41W0736 WTF?
I think none of the PATA 1.8 inch SSDs made today support TRIM. So yes, you will need to clean dirt free space yourself. How often do you clean the free space? (Of course this depends on your usage of the computer) I am using my laptop as a secondary computer, mostly just surfing and downloading a ...

I am able to downgrade through Windows XP.
Which bios version doesnt give the error 2010 on X41?
Newest version is 2.09. I have downgraded to 2.08. If that is not sufficient I will downgrade once more before putting the KingSpec back in.

Re: Upgrade X41 w. 64GB SSD vs. save money for new laptop?
I just reinstalled my IBM 4200RPM HDD again because I needed some programs and files on the disk. One of the programs, that I feel is extremely slow at starting up (Maple) took 40 seconds on the normal HDD and just 13 seconds on the SSD. I have been offered the disk for a price in danish kroner corr...

No, if you ask me. : ) I use ImgBurn to burn ISO these days, there's a portable version BTW. Use a CD-RW so that you can re-use the disc. If you don't have an external writer, then you may also make a bootable USB disk using the ISO/floppy. Cheers. Hehe. I wasn't talking about the difficulty of bur...

Re: Has anyone tried an SSD in the X41? *PICS*
You may try using "flash2 /u" to force update the BIOS if you're using the diskette or bootable CD version. First of all I was sleeping and downloaded the X41T bios instead of just plain X41 bios. But if I try again now, it just tells me inside Windows 7 there is some DeviceIOerror and to reboot an...

Re: Has anyone tried an SSD in the X41? *PICS*
I tried downgrading bios, but it didn't work. Also I have embedded controller version 1.02. Don't know if I can downgrade some other way. I feel that it hangs longer before getting to the error 2010, than it took to start booting Windows on the normal disk. Would be nice if the disk-checking could b...

Automatic defrag is simply by opening "Disk Defragmenter" (just type in the start menu) and make sure that the schedule is turned off. I am also in the search of optimizations. Re: Upgrade X41 w. 64GB SSD vs. save money for new laptop?
I fully agree that an X41 is an awesome machine , and it's because of that I will not spend +/- 250 bucks for a SSD when a X41 will cost +/-370 bucks (all market prices here in Switzerland). My choice in the case above is to buy another X41! :thumbs-UP: I don't get it :-) You keep comparing the upg...

Thank you both for your answers. Good to have confirmed that a netbook, even Lenovo S12 Ion, would definitely be a downgrade. If I should be considering buying a new laptop, eventually also considering 14" size laptops, a decent laptop will in Denmark cost around 7000 DKK or more, which is 5 times t...

Upgrade X41 w. 64GB SSD vs. save money for new laptop?
Hi I have a Thinkpad X41 which was upgraded with an 8 Cell battery, currently down to 56/64 Wh of capacity, but it still runs fine for hours. I only have 1 GB ram but is considering to upgrade that to 2 GB instead (costs approximately 50$ in Danish kr.) Also I realised yesterday, that there are fina...

Hi I have only just recently noticed that it is possible to tap the trackpoint instead of left-clicking. I didn't know this. Re-installing Windows is good to do about once a year, and if you keep up with that, you can probably skip the defrags and reg cleaners. :) In my opinion a reinstall once a year is an overkill. This is my secondary computer which means that I usually don't just install a lot of random stuff which i...

Re: Maintenance of almost 2½ year old X41
More than likely a good cleaning with canned air or a vacuum would do the job. No new thermal paste renewal should be needed. Remove the keyboard and hold the fan so it does not spin uncontrollably when you use the air cleaning. I assume you have done the operating system updates and defragmentatio...
