It's just straightforward with X3100, Just use xrandr. Problem with xrandr is, that it only changes the resolution & screen settings dynamically. After you restart X, your back to what's defined in your xorg.conf. I have yet to figure out, how to tell X via xorg.conf that I want a dualscreen setup ...

Come on guys, all *ubuntu are the same, just remove what you don't want and install what you want. It's a pain for the vendor to offer those 3 choices, and that's not its role.

The only way to get a DVI connector is to get a Mini Dock or an Advanced Dock. But, if you get integrated graphics (GMA), the DVI will not work. Since you have the x1400, you're good to go. Just to correct for anyone else that might read this - The T60 and T61 with integrated graphics DO support DV...
