On a side note, how do you enable USB connections to VirtualBox? Couldn't do it (maybe I'm not technical enough)... VirtualBox (or Hyper-V for that matter) that cannot access USB is totally useless to us... ...passing USB connections to virtualbox can be a real time-wasting hassle). no idea which d...

Having just motherboard-swapped my T430 the sad truth is that yes, you have to COMPLETELY dissasemble the laptop. Bottom of T430 motherboard

I need to flash the bios chips of my T430 to install coreboot/neuter intel ME. For X220/X230 it is very easy as the bios chips are located under the palmrest. For the T420 and T430 it is sadly located at the bottom/downside of the T430 motherboard. Is there a way to remove the bottom case without fu...

A follow up post, meanwhile I bought a USB bios chip programmer and started to modify intelme by setting the NSA backdoor disable bit. Below is now the output of the Intel Detection tool. Seems the malware has been disarmed, going to coreboot all my laptops in the next months :D INTEL-SA-00086 Detec...

Your topics confuse me. Your laptop should not become a brick by attempting to flash SSD firmware. Did you try booting from linux live usb? Is/Was your bios password protected? edit/ seems it boots from live usb so remaining questions: - bios password protected? - did you neuter intelme? delayed boo...

Re: Enabling TRIM on a original X301 SSD

Hi, LIke the other popular OS's, the Linux kernel has been managing the TRIM for a while... Either on-the-fly (discard option in the mount table) or on a scheduled basis (fstrim utility). That's not an issue. I suggest you read the 2nd article I posted above. If you don't configure correctly, your ...

Re: Enabling TRIM on a original X301 SSD

You can update your SSD firmware, sure, but TRIM is normally managed via your OS. Which OS do you use? For Linux I suggest you read the Debian wiki and the article they link to which captures quite well the TRIM process and how to set it up correctly on all levels: https://wiki.debian.org/SSDOptimiz...

Re: Time for a "what distro are you running" thread...

I still have Windows on my T430, but mainly because I am doing a lot of CD ripping, and the best program I have found (EAC) is Windows only. When I can replace that it's curtains for Windows. This is one of the fake reasons to justify keep using Microsoft malware. You have morituri which is as adva...

My desktop and most laptops run W7 (a few oldies with XP never go online). Nothing runs W8 or W10. None of the above have had ANY Windows update since May 2016 . None of them ever give me a problem! The only updates they get are for the (free) Bitdefender AV (automatic) and (free) Malwarebytes (bi-...

Re: IBM may be buying Red Hat Linux (subject to shareholders' agreements)

We are simply looking any Linux flavor with UI that mimic closely to Windows 7, runs Windows specific programs that we use (need to test this), and user friendly installation/maintenance (no command lines). I'm not all that certain that Cent OS - or Red Hat for that fact - will fit the bill then. A...

If IBM really does acquire Red Hat, we might well (finally) give Red Hat a spin as an experimental project on some of our laptops. whatever Linux distro which suits you will better perform than whatever windows operating system you adored in the past. Re: Mixing and matching X220 and X230 parts... Anyone with any experience on it?

Are the screens swappable between x220 and x230? Yes, in fact the same exact panels were used in them (although naturally most X220 had earlier batches/revisions , and most X230 had later revisions). Amazing, my x220 has a dead pixelized screen and the x230 perfect one. Will swap the x230 screen in...

Yes, why not? just bought one 2 days ago, put debian on it, slammed a 500GB Samsung 860 EVO SSD and the beast is already flying with only stock 4GB ram. That sounds nice! Did you need to tinker with the BIOS to get the SSD running in that one, like one has to do on the t61 with Middleton's, or did ...

don't know but I am 200% windows independent and never used it since 2008. you don't need windows at all, people still going back and forth between windows and linux are maybe advanced windows users, but not advanced at all in the linux environment. the mandatory change needed is in your head, like ...
