i just connected this to an external monitor and despite the seller's claim, laptop outputs just fine to the external monitor, so i am guessing this means it has a faulty LCD?

To get your hopes up a bit, DSTN 760 models can be swapped with a TFT screen and vice versa. I can confirm this. I've done TFT-DSTN swap between 760LD and 760EL and it worked. The OS is not the issue. It's the BIOS. If the BIOS doesn't have the HDD geometry hardcoded into it or a similar drive size, it will return a lower value to the OS. look and see if drive sizes are mentioned in the read.me file of the last BIOS update.
