Re: "Fan Error" (X200) Motherboard or Fan? *SOLVED*
I ran it without the fan, then shut it down. A few hours later it booted up with no problem. No fan error. Then it booted twice again (once yesterday and once this morning) with no fan error. I'm not sure what's going on, except that perhaps it's the fuse, and it's sensitive to specific environment ...

Re: "Fan Error" (X200) Motherboard or Fan? *SOLVED*
After doing this very intermittently (about 4 or 5 times) in the past 3 months, my trick of holding the power button didn't work. I have been able to circumvent the Fan Error message by pushing the Esc key when it appears, and then the computer boots up. However, the fan doesn't work (I was doubting...

Re: "Fan Error" (X200) Motherboard or Fan? *SOLVED*
I wanted to add my experience with this. I have been using my X200 for about 1 1/2 years now. Two months ago, I got a "Fan Error" on boot, and it wouldn't start up. I tried removing the battery and running it off the AC adapter, but it didn't work. Finally, I remembered that some issues in Thinkpads...

Re: X301 or X220s to replace my X60s?
I upgraded from an X61 to an X200. It's a really nice upgrade. You can put up to 8GB on the X200. Add a fast HD, and it will be nice and fast, much faster than an X60. I got my like-new X200 last year for $150 shipped, and I have it running a triple boot (Windows XP, Windows 7, and Ubuntu). These ar...

Re: Windows 7 Driver Install on fresh Thinkpad X200: Windows Update or manual installation?
Lenovo has an utility by the name of System Update which was derived out of the old IBM one. You're definitely better off with their drivers than you'd be with the ones from WU. Personally, I install the very few basic and most-needed drivers/utilities and call it a day, but it's your system to pla...

Windows 7 Driver Install on fresh Thinkpad X200: Windows Update or manual installation?
Hello, I just installed a fresh Windows 7 OEM on one of my Thinkpad X200 partitions. To install the drivers, should I just fire up Windows Update, or should I use a driver matrix from Lenovo and install manually? Back in the IBM days, around 10 years ago or so, there was this Software Installer prog...

for a decent faraday cage try copper window screen material.. let me know how it works out.. and i am NOT mocking.. if such a thing were to be weaponized (EMP generator or the like) it'll probably be the chinese or russians who do it.. meanwhile the iranians will just lob a bomb into orbit and take...

Re: In appreciation of the IBM Thinkpad X24
Started off w/ X20, then X21, now I am writing on an X24. I really do like it, my hinges are getting loose, but i am lazy and don't always close the lid when I pick it up to move. Not a gamer, so it still works plenty good for me. Biggest problem is stupid FireFox memory leak bogs it down badly. To...

Re: Thinkpad you've never had?
Yes, the 240Z (I had a 240X) are very nice machines, small form factor, very powerful for the time, and still usable. I used mine up until 2 years ago for general purpose (web browsing, email, etc), as well as a cheap on-vehicle GPS before dedicated GPS devices were really affordable. The 240X I had...

Thank you for your input, gentlemen. Good luck with that! Just wondering, are you shooting with a wide angle to give you a better chance of catching something? I'm going out tomorrow with my wife to a peak nearby where we live. Not sure if it will be too late though. They say Perseids were crossing nearby from August 11 to August 13. W...

Re: X61 HD temperature way too high
Let us know how this goes. I have used Linux on-and-off the last couple of years. My experience is that the hard drive area becomes very warm when using Linux compared to Windows. Perhaps power management needs to be tweaked in Linux? Hi emeraldgirl08, I figured out what was going on. You can read ...

Another August... time again to re-visit this thread.... Good conditions for viewing tonight. Moon has set and there's none of the typical summertime fog (yet) rolling over the Santa Cruz Mountains. Re: X61 HD temperature way too high
Quick update: I did some research, and the reading i was using (from the IBM ACPI interface) is much higher than the SMART reading the HDD reports. So I think the IBM ACPI data might be unreliable regarding HD temperatures. I started this other thread in the Linux section: http://forum.thinkpads.com...

[RESOLVED]Discrepancy between IMB ACPI and SMART data for HD
I am getting a huge discrepancy between the data for my HD temperature reported by IBM ACPI and the SMART data provided by the hard drive itself. The HDD temperature reported by the IBM ACPI interface, is it just "somewhere nearby the hard drive"? That would explain some difference, but it is too bi...

Re: X61 HD temperature way too high
Since I still had lying around the original HD this X61 came with, which has a Windows 7 installation, I popped it in, installed SpeedFan, and tried to figure out how hot it would get. It turns out that it runs about 12C cooler than the other one in Ubuntu 12.04. Not sure it if is the HD itself or t...

Faraday cages to protect your Thinkpads
I didn't come up with anything in a search of the forum. Recently I've been obsessing that a rogue solar flare will hit us and cause enough disruptions to damage electronic equipment like our beloved Thinkpads. The one way to protect electronic equipment like this from such an event (or from somethi...

Re: Windows XP and Linux Dual boot problems
Windows XP operates correctly. Ubuntu has big problems with the screen. The top half of the screen is OK, the bottom half is a jaggy blurry mess. The mouse pointer leaves a trail behind it that never goes away, so it appears that there are video driver issues. I can get to a command prompt and oper...

A couple of times I've run into sellers that, no matter how I explain the situation, they adamantly say that "I know it's a T23 because that's what's on the keyboard!" :banghead: That's so true... :D My remaining X24, which I bought in the spring of 2005 and is still in great condition, says X22 on...

You need to be more specific, like: WD [model]/320GB/5400rpm/4MB cache. I use an X61s with 32GB SSD (only for traveling) and an Intel 6200 wifi card. No heat problems at all. Thank you, RBS. Re: looking for buying advice for a thinkpad subnotebook
Just to add to the excellent points, for emphasis, that the X6x machines run hot (specifically the hard drive, which is what I care the most about). The X200 is, in my experience, much cooler.
I just started a thread about this: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=111022

X61 HD temperature way too high
I particularly care about HD temperatures, because high temperatures are particularly damaging to hard drives (at least non-flash drives), and hard drive failure can mean data loss. My X61 HD reaches a temperature of close to 60C while idling. If the CPU is working hard (but the HD is idling), then ...

OK, thank you for confirming it's actually a tricky operation. I'll order a CMOS battery and use your trick when I connect it.
Good thinking about that disclaimer too. There's no warranty that what you did would work in other system, so "caveat emptor" might be a good strategy in this case.

Re: Got my X61 but... it has a Supervisor Password!
CMOS batteries are available by the gazillions on eBay from about $1.80 onwards. T23 has the same battery as T30/T4x/R5x/T6x They last on average 5 years or more. Just check for "CMOS battery IBM T23" [or substitute T23 with any of the above]. Thank you, I'll do that. I remember the CMOS battery on...
