FS: UK Thinkpad 770 - rough but working with HDD

#1 Post by solidpro » Sun Jun 09, 2024 12:47 pm

The good:

Hibernation battery removed before internal damage.
CMOS battery replaced with new one
Clean install of Windows 98SE with all drivers installed
Good working keyboard, trackpoint. 24X CD-ROM drive
Original 5Gb hard drive in original IBM caddy

The bad:

No power switch, you need to use a screwdriver to push the power plunger
No main battery
No HDD cover
LCD showing some blemishes around the very edges (light)
No PSU

£50. + Postage.

Greetings. I'm trying to refurb a 770x and the biggest issue so far is the lack of available hard drive caddys or ultrabay HDD adapters.. I can't find any online, are you willing to part that component out? The hdd and caddy. I don't really have a need for another whole unit, I already have a donor 770. Oh I'm also looking for a dimm cover. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated, thanks.

Sorry to disturb in this thread, but do somebody of you know the name of that brown connector that is used on the HDD caddy? Is it possible to buy it somewhere?

If you're talking about the connector included with the caddy that goes into the proprietary connector inside the laptop, that is also what I am after. I too just need the adapter, I won't be using the enclosure because I'm using an SD to IDE adapter as storage. Check out this thread where people discuss creating an adapter board. If anyone has any info on the success of that project I would appreciate it.

For a while over the last 6 months or so I've had 770 stuff listed on ebay for dirt cheap prices. I sold a rough one with a HDD in it and I sold a caddy on it's own. Sadly all I have is complete (perfect-ish) machines, so I don't have anything left to sell. If something turns up, I will remember this thread and come back.

I have found this right now ... looking for some other stuff on that site.

https://www.willhaben.at/iad/kaufen-und ... 1473768204

But the price is ridiculous ... in my eyes :) So maybe it is better to buy the machine from solidpro, part it and sell the parts for some giveaway prices.

The adapter should be a passive thing - just pin to pin. So it can be for sure made easily and maybe directly for CF cards or msata drives so it can go "straight in" to the connector. Do we have a pinout of that connector somewhere ?

Yes this thread discusses the pin out and conversation to cf card, but it doesn't seem anyone ever had one made to test.

If anyone has more info I'd be all ears.

Bill Morrow, I would be very interested in purchasing both of those 770 drive caddys. How would you like to go about this? Thank you in advance for checking this out and replying.

Oh wow thank you so much. I've been looking everywhere. I'm a long time lurker here so this finally pushed me to make an account, (not a big online person.) If you have the video card add-on I would buy that too, I saw you posted about one a loooong time ago. There are a few other parts I'm looking for like a dimm cover, ultrabay DVD, but I don't want to pester you, but if you're looking to get rid of old parts I'd gladly help. I'm in NC.

I am also interested in some. The aftermarket versions can be even more interesting.
