POP won't go away
POP won't go away
Bought a T410 off eBay purported to have a Power On Password. Got it for parts, but thought I'd try removing the POP. The HMM gives instructions as to how to remove, so it must be an OK action. Followed the instructions - but no change; the lock with the small box just to the left is still there [the icon Lenovo says is for the POP]. Puzzlement????
Looked in Lenovo site and found the same instructions as in the HMM - but with a added sentence not found in the HMM.
"Note: Some ThinkPad systems have the ability to reset the Power-on passwords in the ThinkPad BIOS setup utility if a Supervisor password has been set."
Does this mean the SVP has to be removed and then the POP?
Am I missing something?

POP and SVP have the same icon.
If removing the POP as per Lenovo instructions does not work, you do have an SVP.

The Lenovo site shows a different icon for SVP - same lock but the figure just to the left looks like a lolipop stuck in a card holder. Or maybe the stick shift lever on a race car?
There's another icon for the HD with the number 1 above a cylinder.
The icon I keep getting is the small box to the left of the lock.

Re: POP won't go away
The Lenovo site shows outdated info.
Since about from the T43 upwards, the old SVP icon (torso+lock) is no longer shown.
Both POP and SVP nowadays show the same monitor+lock.

Man, what a body if that's a torso <g>.
So, this unit has the SVP. Not worth removing since I bought it for parts in case the three other T410's in the family go bad.

Re: POP won't go away
It may have been true that the system had a power-on password. However, if it also had a BIOS password, you were doomed from the start. Pulling out the CMOS battery will get rid of the POP but it will automatically invoke the BIOS lock (aka, Supervisor password or SVP). Lost of date/time information that occurs when the POP is removed forces system into BIOS on next boot. If you don't know the SVP you can't get any further.RRHODY wrote:Bought a T410 off eBay purported to have a Power On Password.
As RBS says, the POP and SVP prompts are the same (despite what the IBM/Lenovo support pages say on this). When you are shown the "box" or "monitor" password prompt at power up, you have no idea if it's the POP working as it's supposed to, or the SVP. My suggestion on future eBay purchases is that if the seller says the system has a power-on password, just assume it's an SVP.

Re: POP won't go away
Good advice. I bought it for the screen, DVD, and battery, so I got what I expected.
