How to connect to 4G LTE from a thinkpad?

#1 Post by Whitieiii » Wed Jan 02, 2019 5:04 pm

Haven't connected to a 4G LTE connection on a laptop before... does the carrier have specific software to connect or is it handled by windows 10? I'm putting in a wwan 4G LTE card in my Thinkpad T440s (and soon a T460p when I get one) and want to know how to do it... I've got the antennas and everything in the computer but don't know... I'll most likely be connecting with At&t but what do i need to do?

I've been using PdaNet for Android for years now.

Get a SIM card from AT&T, and activate it through AT&T.

I'm limited to 600kbps over pdanet as I've already tried that.. not enough speed to watch videos

I'm not a big video watcher and I don't play games. I can see how that speed might be a deal breaker.

The 4G modem manufacturer may have connection software to use. Check the manufacturer's website. Also check Lenovo's website for your model ThinkPad's driver page for modem drivers and possible software. I used to use Sierra Wireless software with my Sierra Wireless cellular modem. I have not needed or used a cellular modem for a few years now.

You don't need any driver for Windows 10 because the WWAN has standard MBIM interface. Much more important is the firmware update of the WWAN card. That's why you have to install Lenovo software for the particular hardware.

Typically there is a generic worldwide firmware except US/Australia carriers who have some special requirements. The Lenovo software package installs a Windows service that detects the carrier from the SIM card and loads proper firmware version to get the WWAN work for US/Australia carriers.
