Good read but it's a shock that an i5 would be faster because of thermal throttle done to the i7 plus with no management done on lenovo's part the i7 cpu in a work load would go into thermal throttle loop where it turbo, cool/throttle, turbos again, cools/throttles again... I was thinking of getting one of these in the future but with the i5 limited to 8GB ram i might stay away

Just a poor cooling solution again. It is sad that we desperately need these tech sites to reveal all the tricks and lies current vendors has done (and I believe are aware of).

Saw something similar when I tried to 'upgrade' from my Surface Pro 4 (i7-6650U) to an XPS 13 (i7-7560U). The XPS 13 had a nominally faster CPU (with basically same GPU as the SP4) but in practice it was consistently slower because of thermal throttling. With a small external fan the SP4 never throttled noticeably. Having the hot components mounted behind the display seems like a much better idea for cooling. If only MS let you upgrade the storage . . .

Surprised to see this. Though to be honest, I've noticed that m X1 Carbon Tablet (3rd gen) i7 gets much hotter than it should when sitting idle, and I've wondered what is up with the power management / thermal cooling / throttling /whatever. And early on when I first got the machine, I also noticed it would sometimes fall into some weird cycle of spinning up the fan loudly then winding it down then spinning it back up again.

More recently, some of the wild fan spinning cycles seem to have settled down. I can't say for sure if the thermals have also settled down or not.

Despite the test evidence in the Notebookcheck article, I still wonder if some of the issues aren't related to drivers/firmware/power management settings that can vary considerably across machines. I'm more interested in whether my machine actually performs on demand under real-world conditions that require a fast CPU vs. benchmarks. In this case, hopefully (for me), the benchmarks point to firmware/driver issues that either have been fixed already, or that will be fixed soon. There was a new BIOS in December, and I've had a couple new firmware updates this month, including one for Intel.

A lot of that unnecessary misbehavior is due to the pathetic update-idiocy of Micro$haft's W10.
It takes months to settle down, and then the next monster-update comes, and the same crap-history repeats itself!

100% agree, most of the stuff happening in the background like telemetry, force downloading games, etc. is just awful.
And every weekly forced 1gb patch they release breaks something. Slowdowns, killing the battery, loosing files, or total bricking. They realized that they would keep their consumers no matter how hard they screw them, so now every home user is an unpaid, unsupported beta-tester.
I also bet the weird behavior is caused by something messing up power management / firmware / drivers. U series processor performance and power consumption is very sensitive to tuning.

And the funny thing is nothing but windows 10 will run good enough on the x1 tablet even with all the crap windows is doing... Because we all know how good linux is with touchscreens and stuff

Yeah, as much as we can all hate on Windows 10 there isn't much else out there that can directly compete.
Personally I prefer 8 to 10, since it's still pretty good with touch/tablet input but is much more stable.
I've also had some luck loading ChromiumOS to get decent touch support and the android app library.
