Haswell thinkpads coming soon?
Haswell thinkpads coming soon?
I'm shopping for a new laptop and notice that discounts at lenovo.com are unusually good. Meanwhile, Haswell cpu's in at least some configurations (maybe not mobile) will supposedly ship June 1.
I guess I can wait that long. Any idea what past observations have been, when Intel releases a new cpu? Will Thinkpads get it right away? Will there be a price jump? Will the old models still be available?
I'm thinking of getting an X230. It's not perfect, a Haswell version would be better, but I worry a bit about it being discontinued instead, in favor of something that messes up stuff compared with the current version.

Re: Haswell thinkpads coming soon?
I've seen it go both ways. I don't think Lenovo has given any indication of which way it's going to go.
I say if you like the X230, get it. It's a very nice machine and Haswell won't offer you much unless you're pushing the machine nearly all the time and even then it'll be a modest bump.

Re: Haswell thinkpads coming soon?
Thanks. Haswell has drastically lower idle power than earlier cpu's and so a Haswell x230 should have much longer battery life. I'm also interested in the TSX extensions for concurrent programming. Overall you're probably right though, and I should probably get an X230 while they are still out there. Laptops in general seem to just be getting worse.

Re: Haswell thinkpads coming soon?
Seems weird to me that Lenovo one of the top 3 manufacturers of the world would wait so long... I mean there are already non-thinkpad lenovo's running the new chip out there apparently:

I sure hope we'll see them sooner!

These are devices with Quad-Core CPUs, the Duaö-Core CPUs with 37w and vPro come later.
