Trackpoint Buttons Returning?

#1 Post by jdk » Thu Oct 09, 2014 8:18 pm

I am reading another website that shows the new ThinkPad Helix 2 will feature the return of trackpoint buttons. If true, what a relief. It looks like Lenovo may be admitting to a mistake. It's certainly sparked my interest in the forthcoming X/T*50 line of machines.

What do you think? Is this enough to rekindle interest in newer models, or have you moved on, or did it even bother you in the first place?

One thing I'm fairly certain of: Many people bought traditional Thinkpads /because/ of the Trackpoint. I'm not sure that a buttonless trackpad was *ever* a selling point, and only turned diehards towards other vendors. Thoughts?
.: Lenovo X250 - 16GB, 500GB SSD, Model M SSK (Dec. 1997), Dell P2416D, OpenBSD Current :.

There is probably a lot of pressure at Lenovo to come out with new cool things, so they introduce changes for the sake of changes. Also they probably wanted something that looks cool sitting next to a competitor's laptop instead of looking similar to a Thinkpad from ten years ago. Lots of companies make these kinds of mistakes. BMW of the early 2000's and Microsoft with Windows 8 come to my mind.

If Lenovo doesn't stick with the tried and true, there are simply fewer compelling reasons for long-time customers to go with them for a new laptop.

Never really got used to using a trackpoint so that feature don't bother me either way. Mostly prefer a mouse.

If they ever bring back the classic keyboard and a 4:3 IPS machine, I'd line up with credit card in hand. But I'm afraid this will always be wishful thinking on my part.
