Moving from T60 to X220T ?
Moving from T60 to X220T ?
Hello guys,
As you may have heard in the other thread I made a while ago, I was as disappointed as many of you with the new thinkpad keyboards in the current generation. As mentioned, I was looking into the X220T as a possible upgrade, as it is the last thinkpad to have the good keyboard. Looking at it, I like all of the features, with the only drawback being the screen size. The T60 I have been used to is 1400x1050, while it seems like the best screen you can get on the X220T is 1366x768, which seems like it could be a significant drop. I will be looking to purchase an upgrade either this winter or in the spring.
The point of all of this is an opinion question: has anyone here made a similar switch and noticed significant detriment? I use my laptop mainly for work, mostly programming and linux admin. (mainly running ubuntu) It is difficult to tell if I would like it or not only from videos.
Thanks for reading.

Re: Moving from T60 to X220T ?
X220T is a fine machine, generally speaking.
Yes, 1366x768 is not a lot. But it's a 12.5" panel, as opposed to 14" or 15" on a T60.
My only beef with lower widescreen resolutions - anything under 1680x1050, really - is that you can't fit an entire Word document at 100%...other than that, X220T is both cooler-running and significantly better-performing than any T6x will ever be...
My $0.02 only...

Re: Moving from T60 to X220T ?
I would recommend a regular X220 with IPS over the X220t unless you really have a need for tablet functionality. The X220t 'guides' that keeps the screen in place when closed breaks easily.
Plus, a regular X220 will be thinner and lighter.

The X220 is indeed a good choice as well. However, there have been reported issues with the black plastic strip at the top of the lid seperating. I am not sure if this was only an early batch problem.
On the other hand, you could look at an X201 which still packs fast i5 and i7 processors, and doesn't have the issue stated above. It even retains lid latches and a 16:10 aspect ratio (although you are still stuck with a relatively low resolution). Some have reported the hinges becoming loose overtime, though.

Current Thinkpads: W530 (functional classic keyboard mod), X301, T61, T60, T43, A31p, T23, 600X, 770
Other: mk5 Toughbook cf-19, mk1 Toughbook cf-53

X201 is not a bad machine per se, however the screen is vastly inferior to the IPS one on X220, and they tend to run on the warm side of the spectrum...brchan wrote:

Re: Moving from T60 to X220T ?
Hey guys, I really appreciate the feedback. The main concerns you seem to have are about the screen. Though it is not a make-or-break decision, I would enjoy having the tablet functionality for travel, as I am on the move fairly often. It is a significant change from the usual screen which would dissuade you from buying the product? The tablet versions still seem to have IPS screens from what I can tell from a little research...
