Ultra Bay HDD connection problems.

#1 Post by Hans Gruber » Thu May 07, 2015 5:22 pm

I purchased a Ultra Bay SATA caddy drive. I put in a HDD and it recognized the SSD in the drivers but didn't detect the HDD in Windows 7. How do I get my T410 to recognize the HDD in the ultra bay slot?

Anybody have suggestions or tips on how I can get the ultra bay to show the HDD? The OS drivers recognize the drive but the OS does not show HDD content or an icon in the Computer. With the standard CD/DVD, it shows the drive when I take it out and reinsert the drive.

Has the HDD been initialized and formatted? If not, then you probably won't see a drive letter until you do that. Also, is there another system(s) where can separately verify that both the Ultrabay HD adapter and the drive is good?

If I connect the ultra bay drive minus a HDD. Will it detect it in my Computer on the Windows 7 C drive as a D drive?

Ray,
I solved part of the problem. I was using a 128GB SSD that was previously in a RAID O configuration on my desktop. I was intending that drive to run one of my T410 series. I discovered that I didn't remove the RAID configuration tag when I tried to install it as a main OS drive. It was not detected because of the RAID O tag. I had to put it back in my desktop and go into the RAID configuration utility to wipe it clean and remove the RAID member tag.

I have a 250GB HDD. I am just testing but should I format it as a slave or non master book drive?

As far as I know an empty HDD adapter will NOT show up at all in Windows.

I always initialize and format Ultrabay drives as non-bootable. If you're asking if I set any jumpers on the drive to denote master or slave, then no I don't.

Success. I wiped the drive clean, instead of reformatting it as I did before. I wiped it to unallocated space. Opened Disk Management and formatted it in Disk Management. I expected it to light up like the CD/DVD burner lights up as a drive. It shows the D drive as turned off. I named it E drive and it shows up as a E: Hard Drive.

I just got the SATA caddy as a testing device. I have some T410s models and was thinking of using 64GB for the main drive backed up by SATA caddy's with 250GB-1TB drives.

I often times make mistakes because I am not a software guy. Hardware is my specialty, but I always eventually figure out the software side of things.

For those who trouble shoot Windows OS. My version of patching or trouble shooting is to reinstall the entire OS. It's faster that way.
