Aunt needs a new laptop.. suggestions?

#1 Post by Whitieiii » Mon May 15, 2023 1:12 pm

My aunt has been using an X220 for almost 7 years now and its starting to die in every possible way... There really isn't any hope to save something this old when she's just a basic user.... That was the best laptop i could afford at the time with the i5 and now it is time to upgrade her... The x220 is using 8gb ram and a 7200 rpm HDD because 500GB SSD at the time were about $150-200 she is older and probably this will be her last computer.. with the weight of the x220 and bridge battery she can't carry it around any longer for extended periods of time when she goes 9n travel to the city... She needs the most amount of battery life possible... She is only doing basic tasks but more than not uses the computer for uploading photos and videos... Should I go for an X260 or should I splurge and go for an X280? It would be using windows 10 and don't really want to spend too much on it... It would be getting a 1tb ssd and 16 gb of ram.. would like to go with a 4 core CPU but that might not be possible trying to get the price as low as possible... What do you recommend I should do? Thinking about my opinions...
My Collection:
A30 Pentium 3 512MB ram 60GB HDD Win 98SE
HP 8460p 2nd gen i7 8GB ram 500GB HDD Radeon 6470m Win 7
T440p 4th gen i7 12GB ram GT 730m 1TB SSD Win 10
X1 Extreme Gen 2 16GB ram 1650 M-Q 1TB SSD Win 10
x260 6th gen i-series
Mum's T440s 4th gen i5 8GB ram 300GB SSD Win 10

Personally, as a computer, even my X250 with an SSD and 16GB of RAM is a very solid machine, but the thing is that the X250 (and similarly, the X260) use batteries which an earlier post of mine in the marketplace forum and my own research show me that there are almost no new, official OEM batteries available for anymore. As someone who thinks about the battery life and the longevity of the laptop, you might find that a bit of a dealbreaker.

I think from somewhere in the X280 range they changed the battery, and last I checked, this (OEM) battery is not only available from multiple marketplace sites but from the Lenovo parts website themselves.
So that might be something to consider.

Would recommend a IBM 760 - nice form factor, rugged and top of the line Pentium 166MMX!

Lenovo Yoga Chromebook (Model 6, 7, C13, C630, etc.) might do the trick.
Or go to the competition, like an M$ Surface.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
