Can you boot from a mPCIe-to-USB adapter?

#1 Post by cultOfThinkpad » Tue Mar 26, 2024 10:26 am

Anyone ever heard of these things?

Does anyone know if its possible to plug a liveboot USB device in one of these
and run the operating system from it? Will anything plugged in the adapter be recognized in
a Thinkpads boot menu?

That device simply routes the USB signals on the mini-PCIe slot to a Type-A USB port. If the mPCIe slot your your laptop has USB signals wired in (the WLAN slot on older models like the T60/T61 and X60/X61 don't) and have a USB flash drive than can physically fit in that adapter, then it will will work. I think someone in this forum already did something like this.

When my X220's WLAN slot malfunctioned, I installed that adapter (with a USB WiFi-AC dongle) on the WWAN slot to regain WiFi connectivity.

II don't have the skills needed to fix a malfunctioning mini-PCIe slot, and can only marvel at the repair work you and other exceptional members post in this forum.
